Hayes - rising star. (Allsport)

John Hayes did not begin his rugby career until the age of 18 but in 1998 was called into the Ireland Senior squad for the first time for that summer tour to South Africa.

Despite not appearing in any of the Tests, he gained valuable experience in the midweek matches.

In November 98 was in the Ireland side to face South Africa in Ravenhill.

The 2000 Six Nations marked his breakthrough though, a string of impressive displays meaning he was one of the first names on the team-sheet.

He has been ever since with his fierce competitive spirit and fighting qualities a key component of the Irish squad.
