Fraser Waters crossed for two tries as Wasps completed a crucial bonus-point 33-17 win over Scarlets at Stradey Park to take control of Pool Five.

It sealed a successful weekend for English clubs against Welsh teams with Cardiff Blues the only one of the four regions to register a point after their draw with Harlequins.

Wasps now have nine points from their opening two matches while the Scarlets are still looking to get off the mark after leaking 81 points in two games and are propping up the pool table.

Just before the kick-off, Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan laid a wreath on the middle of the pitch in memory of Ray Gravell, the Scarlets president and former Wales centre who died earlier in the month.

Wasps, who were forced into a late change when John Hart replaced James Haskell in the starting line-up, opened up leads of 12-0 and 19-7 in the first half before going into the interval at 19-10 up.

Waters pounced twice in the space of six minutes as the Scarlets showed deficiencies in defence which were further exposed when George Skivington went over for a third try.

Despite having a shaky line-out - they lost three of their four throw-ins - Wasps took control of the tie when Waters was put over by fellow centre Riki Flutey in the 15th minute.

And the Scarlets found themselves deeper in trouble when Waters made the most of Morgan Stoddart failing to gather the ball on his 22.

Simon Shaw collected and linked with Waters, whose try was converted by Danny Cipriani.

The Scarlets regrouped to score a breakaway try from a disputed penalty at a scrum. Dwayne Peel took a quick tap and raced away to put his skipper Simon Easterby over by the posts.

But the Welsh region's comeback was stopped in its tracks four minutes later when the Scarlets missed three tackles as Skivington crossed.

Five minutes before half-time, Stephen Jones cut the Guinness Premiership's lead to nine points with a penalty.

The Wasps had to work hard for their bonus-point try, which came in the 66th minute through Cipriani after the referee, Allain Rolland, referred it to the television match official.

Cipriani should have been over again three minutes later but he failed to gather his kick and chase with Regan King tracking back to touch down.

But the Wasps' relatively easy away win was complete when Flutey crossed nine minutes from time.

There was a Scarlets try just before the end when Mark Jones sprinted in but it was little consolation for the home side who were contemplating an early exit from the competition.
