Bristol 32 Leeds 6

Jason Strange kicked 22 points for Bristol at the Memorial Ground to leave Leeds still looking for their first Guinness Premiership win of the season.

Tries at the end of each half from wing David Lemi and second row Roy Winters ensured the victory, and also meant former England hooker Mark Regan maintained his personal record of always being on the winning side against his former clubs.

The hosts applied the early pressure and Strange put them in the lead after four minutes from close to the right touchline.

The Tykes tried hit back immediately with centre Andre Snyman trying to blast his way through but the home side stood firm and moved further ahead through Strange when the visitors were caught offside in front of their own posts.

Midway through the half Leeds got their first points on the board with a 45-metre penalty from fly-half Gordon Ross, only for Strange to maintain Bristol's grip on the game as he drilled his third penalty between the posts.

Ross missed a second attempt from just inside the Bristol 10-metre line, and he was made to rue the miss when Lemi again showed pace and determination which eventually led to more points from Strange.

Leeds tried to stretch the Bristol defence as wing Dave Doherty broke down the left, but he was stopped 10 metres from the line by centre Sam Cox and full-back Vaughan Going.

Doherty was penalised for not releasing the ball but Bristol failed to clear and minutes later Ross landed his second penalty.

The first try of the game came at the end of normal time in the first half after Cox crashed through the middle before the ball was quickly recycled through Going to Shaun Perry.

The scrum-half gave a long pass out Lemi who squeezed into the left corner with Strange converting, giving Bristol a 19-6 interval lead.

Bristol quickly set out their stall in the second half with openside flanker Joe El Abd making a break and setting up a ruck. Skipper Matt Salter and Perry exchanged passes before a number of drives to the line. A penalty was first kicked to the corner and a second was slotted between the posts by Strange.

Ross had an opportunity to reduce the arrears with a 30-metre penalty from in front of the posts for offside, but he went wide of the target. Former Bristol lock Scott Morgan was warned for a late tackle on Strange but the resultant penalty hit the left upright.

The ball bounced ball in to play and then Tykes had to play out the final 10 minutes with skipper Justin Marshall in the sin-bin as Strange landed his sixth penalty.

With time running down on the clock a long pass from Cox found Gareth Llewellyn who off-loaded to Lemi. The wing broke down the touchline but could not get past replacement Chris Jones. The ball was popped up to Winters in support to crash over the line. Strange converted.
