Phil Vickery added to England's injury woes ahead of next weekend's RBS Six
Nations Championship clash with Ireland as Gloucester beat Bath with an
injury-time drop goal from substitute Brad Davies.
The Gloucester prop suffered what appeared to be an injury to his right arm
and was forced off 28 minutes into the first half at Kingsholm.
Vickery started England's Six Nations defeat against France at Twickenham and
would have been favourite to face the Irish.
With Leicester's Julian White also sidelined if Vickery fails to recover,
Robinson will have no tight head props left in his 30-man squad forcing him to
gamble on the likes of Bath's Duncan Bell or Northampton's Robbie Morris.
And to add to Robinson's worries Bath's Olly Barkley also pulled out of the
derby match with a calf injury.
Before Vickery's departure, Gloucester had seized the initiative against their
local rivals.
A break from Henry Paul in the midfield saw James Simpson-Daniel offload to
Seti Kiole. The wing then set up Terry Fanolua who muscled his way over the try
line.
Bath bounced back through flanker James Scaysbrook. Steve Borthwick took clear
ball at an attacking lineout. The lineout was brought down but the ball popped
out to Scaysbrook and he duly scooped it up to jump over the ruck and score.
Chris Malone converted then matched Paul's penalty to put Bath 10-8 up before
the break.
There were to be no more tries but Paul and Malone continued their battle of
the boot.
They each landed two penalties, which gave Bath a 16-14 lead and Gloucester
had to manage without hooker Mefin Davies who was sin-binned for killing the
ball. Bath, however, were unable to capitalise on their one-man advantage.
Gloucester had a chance to steal a win with 76 minutes gone but Paul did not
have the legs to convert a 48-metre penalty.
It did not matter though as late replacement Davies came to the rescue with an
82nd-minute drop goal.
The two sides meet again next month in the Powergen Cup semi-finals.
