There was no repeat of last year's giant-killing Powergen Cup display by
Pertemps Bees as they slumped to a heavy defeat to Leeds Tykes at Headingley.
The Bees, who produced last year's biggest upset by dispatching Wasps, were
out-gunned on just about every area of the pitch.
Leeds ran in 13 tries in the 81-17 rout of the National League One side, and
the only consolation for Phil Maynard's men was that they managed two of their
own.
The tone was set after just two minutes when a mistake by the Bees full-back
Dave Knight handed Leeds a five metre scrum.
Tykes got a shove on and were powering over for a push-over try before the
Bees collapsed it, forcing referee Steve Lander into awarding a penalty try.
Gordon Ross converted.
Leeds' next try came from a searing break from centre Chris Bell after the
Bees had turned over possession in midfield.
Bell fed Phil Christophers down the left after beating three men and the
England wingman cantered over. Ross again converted to make it 14-0.
Christophers turned provider for the next try when he burst into the line and
fed Tim Stimpson to score. Ross' conversion made it 21-0.
The Bees held out for a further 18 minutes before Leeds crossed the line
again.
The West Midlands outfit even threatened the Leeds line on a couple of
occasions but the Tykes escaped and good pressure from Tom Biggs forced the Bees
into an error, with the supporting Colm Rigney able to pick up and drive over
the line from close range and Ross again converted.
Biggs scored the next after Ross spotted the Bees defence up too flat and
placed a delightfully weighted chip for Biggs to collect and gallop over. Ross
kicked his fifth conversion of the day to make it 35-0.
Jon Dunbar was next on the scoresheet when he powered through a brave tackle
from Knight to crash over in the left hand corner but Ross was this time
unsuccessful with the conversion.
The visitors finally got on the scoreboard two minutes into the second half
when Leeds were penalised at the breakdown. Fly-half and former Leeds player Tim
Walsh slotted the penalty.
It was not long before Leeds were back in their try-scoring stride. This time
South African prop Rayno Gerber smashed his way through the Bees' defence from a
ruck close to the line. Ross again converted.
The Bees crossed the Leeds try line on 51 minutes when second row Rob Hurrell
made a bulldozing run through a gap in the Tykes defence and offloaded.
The ball was recycled and Hurrell collected and drove over the line and Walsh
converted to make it 47-10.
Tykes responded immediately through a Stimpson try, to take the Leeds tally
past the half-century.
Bees wing Aaron Takarangi crossed for the visitors on 74 minutes when he took
advantage of some shoddy Leeds passing and Walsh converted.
Further tries from substitutes Scott Morgan, David Doherty, Matt Holt and two
more for Biggs completed the scoring.
