Newcastle will face Sale in next month's Powergen Cup final after they subdued
the giant-killing Pertemps Bees at Kingston Park.
The Falcons were flattered by the scoreline as they scored five tries in the
last 13 minutes of the game, including seven minutes of stoppage time.
But they were never seriously troubled by the Midlands side who caused a major
shock when they beat Wasps in the quarter-finals.
Newcastle got the best possible start with two Dave Walder penalties in the
first seven minutes as the Bees struggled to stay with the Newcastle pack.
Warren Britz won a Bees overthrown line-out and a superb 60-metre move ended
with Michael Stephenson tackled into touch on the corner flag by Luke Nabarro to
prevent a try.
Bees scrum half Paul Knight was offside as Hall Charlton broke from the scrum
but Walder missed the penalty.
Newcastle wasted three chances to score with over-elaboration in the Bees 22
when it was clear they had the edge up front.
Their control of the ball was not what it should have been but, in the 28th
minute, a determined attack by Garath Archer, Nick Makin, Hugh Vyvyan and Stuart
Grimes saw Mark Mayerhofler dive over in the 27th minute and Walder struck a
superb touchline conversion for a 13-0 lead.
Jamie Noon then cut through and the ball was funnelled out to Vyvyan who sent
hooker Nick Makin towards the corner but the video referee decided he had not
grounded the ball before he was driven into touch.
Walder kicked his third penalty in the 36th minute and the Bees were
perilously close to having someone sin-binned but they finally got on the
scoreboard when Britz was judged to be holding on in the tackle and Mark Woodrow
kicked the penalty in the 42nd minute.
A Walder penalty at the start of the second half made it 19-3 and Newcastle
were creating plenty of chances but not taking them while some of referee Chris
White's decisions were proving unpopular with the crowd of 5,895.
He was even more unpopular when he disallowed a drive over try by Ian Peel
but, from the scrum, Mayerhofler danced through and Walder crossed for the try
in the 61st minute.
And then the Bees finally cracked under enormous pressure with Stephenson
cutting through and then Grimes finishing off a break by Jamie Noon and Walder
sliding through for three tries in a six minute spell at the end of the match.
Mayerhofler and Ben Gollings finished off the scoring in injury time,
Mayerhofler with a try in the corner after a fine break by Daryl Lilley on
halfway and then Mayerhofler and Lilley broke clear and Gollings followed up to
finish off.
