WASPS REPORTS 2003-2004

Wasps 22 Harlequins 21

Wasps overcame the loss of players to injury and international call-ups to pull off a dramatic win over Harlequins through a last-gasp try from Ayoola Erinle, which Mark Van Gisbergen converted.

With just a minute to go, Quins prop Laurent Gomez was sin-binned and from the pressure of the having the extra man, Wasps contrived the final winning score.

The victory extended Wasps' unbeaten run to a record eight matches and helps keep the pressure on Zurich Premiership pace-setters Bath, but Harlequins will be kicking themselves over the way they let a comfortable lead slip.

The visitors got off to the flying start after only 86 seconds, when England Sevens winger Ugo Monye sped in from 52 metres, with Andy Dunn converting from the touchline.

Despite Van Gisbergen's penalty midway through the first half, Quins went further in front following a scrum and a lightning break from George Harder.

With men spare on either side, flank forward Pat Sanderson nipped in for a second try, which Andy Dunne converted for a 14-3 lead.

However, the sin-binning of Harlequins Karl Rudzki five minutes before the break saw the hosts use the extra man to get George Skivington over after a video touch judge decision, which went unconverted.

Although Mel Deane almost grabbed a third score for the visitors, a Van Gisbergen try and conversion in first-half stoppage time saw Wasps go into the interval ahead 15-14.

Sanderson put the visitors back in front again 41 seconds after the restart, but from then on in instead of turning up the heat and grabbing a fourth try, the visitors had to withstand a lot of pressure.

That eventually saw Wasps use their extra man again as replacement Erinle went over for a crucial score, and Van Gisbergen coolly converted to grab all the points.
