GLOUCESTER REPORTS 2003-2004

Bourgoin 18 Gloucester 37

England Six Nations hopeful James Simpson-Daniel scored a dramatic late try to seal the bonus point that keeps Gloucester's Heineken Cup dream alive.

The winger, in electrifying form of late, scored Gloucester's fourth try on a cold and wet night at the Stade Pierre Rajon to ensure Pool Five will go to the final weekend.

Gloucester can still overhaul Munster and seal a home quarter-final after outplaying former director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre's side.

And with Treviso next up at Kingsholm, the Cherry and Whites are perfectly placed to reach the last eight.

They got off to a perfect start when Marcel Garvey scored the first try of the evening after just 20 seconds, capitalising on Glenn Davis' fumble of Duncan McRae's chip through.

When Henry Paul added the conversion - and then kicked two penalties - Gloucester were cruising at 13-0.

But Peter Buxton's sin-binning shortly before half-time for pulling down a maul allowed the hosts - unbeaten at home in the French championship all season - back into the game.

Lock Pascal Pape went over when Bourgoin drove the Gloucester pack back from a line-out to give the Frenchmen hope going into the half-time break.

Six minutes into the second half they found themselves 15-13 in front as the game swung dramatically.

Christophe Laussucq landed a drop goal, before Garvey carelessly threw the ball into the hands of rampaging centre Florian Fritz, who sprinted 40 metres to score Bourgoin's second try.

Henry Paul nudged Gloucester back in front with a penalty before the visitors stepped up a gear in the final half-hour, with fly-half McRae running the show.

The Australian finished off good work from Paul and Robert Todd to score Gloucester's second try, which Paul - immaculate with the boot all night - converted.

Benjamin Boyet's drop goal hauled Bourgoin back into contention, but when Paul took McRae's pass to score with 17 minutes left, Gloucester's four-try target looked on.

A solid defensive effort kept the home side out in the closing stages and with French legs tiring McRae and Paul again combined to send 21-year-old England prospect Simpson-Daniel away in the 79th minute.
