LEEDS REPORTS 2003-2004

Harlequins 9 Leeds 16

Leeds claimed victory in a largely-forgettable Zurich Premiership clash at The Stoop witnessed by England's World Cup-winning coach Clive Woodward.

The only try of the match came just before the hour mark from Scotland international fly-half Gordon Ross following a debatable scrum decision from referee Shaun Davey, who penalised Harlequins full-back Gavin Duffy for holding on after David Rees had tackled him just outside the 22.

Ross was somehow allowed to scamper through unhindered straight from the scrum and after dusting himself down he added the conversion to put the visitors 13-6 ahead.

In the hour preceding the try the major highlight of the game had been the half-time appearance from Woodward and three members of his England squad - Jason Leonard, Will Greenwood of Harlequins and Mark Regan of Leeds. The World Cup winners drew warm applause from fans who were given little to cheer in the first 40 minutes.

Each side had six points on the board at the interval after Harlequins fly-half Andy Dunne traded penalties with his opposite number Ross.

Ross' try enabled the Tykes to storm ahead but Dunne reduced the deficit with his third penalty on 69 minutes as Quins tried desperately to find a gap in the Leeds defence.

However, another debatable decision gave Ross a chance of his fourth successful kick at goal and he took it with ease to put his side seven points in the clear again with only eight minutes remaining.

Dunne spurned a late penalty chance as the home side became more desperate and despite a long period of stoppage time, including a five-metre scrum the home side were unable to break through and lost their third home match of the season in a disappointing fashion.
