SARACENS REPORTS 2003-2004

Saracens 3 Wasps 42

Wasps claimed their third consecutive win over a shambolic Saracens side who suffered their first home defeat since April.

In a lacklustre opening period it was the visitors who went ahead with a Mark van Gisbergen penalty following a line-out offence 40 metres out.

The home side tried hard to get back on level terms but fly-half Andy Goode was having an off day with the boot and missed his first two penalties as well as two drop goal attempts.

Goode eventually levelled with his third penalty of the game but the home side fell apart in a six-minute spell before the break.

Ian Clarke collected a pass from full-back Tom Voyce and was able to run 15 metres towards the posts for the opening try which Van Gisbergen converted.

Deep in to stoppage time in the first half the visitors went further ahead with a second try after a flowing move featuring Shane Roiser, Johnny O'Connor and Paul Volley creating the opportunity from which Voyce scored the second try and van Gisbergen converted as the visitors turned around 17-3 ahead.

The home side were soon reduced to 14 men in the second period when prop forward Ben Broster was sent to the sin bin for illegal use of his knee. Van Gisbergen hammered home the penalty the home side.

Things got worse for Saracens only a few minutes later when Wasps skipper Craig Dowd finished from close range and with van Gisbergen having an immaculate day with the boot, the visitors were piling on the points.

Wasps earned their bonus point a few minutes later when centre Fraser Waters ran in virtually unchallenged from Voyce's pass for a try which van Gisbergen was unable to convert.

Both sides started to make a number of replacements but the visitors continued to keep adding to the scoreboard, van Gisbergen making it 35-3 with another penalty after 65 minutes.

In stoppage time Voyce added a fifth try which van Gisbergen converted to leave the home side in a sorry state.
