Wasps moved up to second place in the Premiership table and are now just one
win away from a guaranteed place in the end of championship play-offs while the
Shoguns slipped to the foot of the table.
The home side took the lead after five minutes when full-back Shane Drahm
landed a 45-metre penalty from out wide on the left.
The visitors had an opportunity to level the scores immediately but decided to
kick for the corner.
From the resulting line-out fly-half Alex King looked to have found a gap in
the Bristol defence as he went over the line but Wasps were penalised when
full-back Craig Dowd crossed in front of King.
Bristol put in some strong tackling to pin the visitors back to their own half
but missed the opportunity to increase their lead midway through the half when
Drahm's 30-metre kick from in front of the posts was low and wide.
Wasps finally got on the scoreboard just before the half hour with a move down
the right touchline with centre Stuart Abbott scoring the first try of the game.
King added the conversion only for Drahm to land two penalties to give the
Shoguns a 9-7 interval lead.
The visitors struck early in the second half through flanker Paul Volley after
a drive from a line-out. King missed the conversion and then Drahm missed a
penalty, before King broke from the halfway line and Abbott set up Josh Lewsey
to score against his former club.
King added the conversion but failed to find the mark with the next try after
Abbott made the break, looked outside to Lewsey but dummied and passed inside to
Mark van Gisbergen who scored out wide.
Drahm added a fourth penalty on the hour before replacement Phil Greening and
Simon Shaw made a penetrating break. When the ball was recycled out wide, centre
Ayoola Erinle crashed over.
Flanker Joe Worsley scored Wasps' sixth try out wide before wing Brendon
Daniel scored an injury-time consolation try for the Shoguns, converted by
Drahm.
