England lock Simon Shaw scored a hat-trick of tries to give Wasps the edge
over Saracens in Sunday's nail-biting Zurich Premiership London derby at Vicarage
Road.
Sarries flanker Richard Hill opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a try
after tearing down the left, and the conversion came from centre Nicky Little
who did the business again two minutes later following a try by full-back Tim
Horan.
Frantically playing catch-up, Wasps second row Shaw took advantage of a short
pass to place the ball down over the line - allowing Alex King to convert in the
19th minute to add to his earlier penalty.
King proved again he had his kicking boots with a 25th-minute penalty from
just outside Saracens' 22-metre line.
Shaw's second try came in the 34th minute when he got the final touch as the
pack broke through, completely destroying the Saracens defence.
The home side battled to get back into the game and were helped with a
powerful 30-metre penalty in the 37th minute, making the half-time score 25-17
to the visitors.
The second-half scoring was opened by French superstar Thomas Castaignede. He
ran three-quarters of the pitch, kicked the ball high and ran on to catch it
again before eventually completing a touchdown which was converted by Little.
But Wasps kept piling on the pressure, and in the 53rd minute flanker Paul
Volley came up with a try from a rolling maul. King again converted.
As Saracens tried hard to get back into the game, it was winger Richard
Haughton who scored a try which was converted by Little.
But Wasps made sure of victory when Shaw touched down with 10 minutes to go,
and King again added the extra points.
