Leeds Tykes returned to third place in the Zurich Premiership as they
completed the double over Bristol Shoguns.
However the west country side did manage a bonus point as the winning margin
was fewer than seven points.
Bristol made two changes from the side that were beaten in the Heineken Cup by
Leinster with lock Garath Archer (neck) replaced by Scott Morgan and Jamie
Williams preferred to Lee Best at full-back.
Leeds, who have not had a competitive game since beating Bath at Headingley
four weeks ago, made one change with Scotland A international prop Gavin Kerr
returning for his first start since the Parker Pen Cup game against Pontypridd
in mid-December.
Bristol applied the early pressure but were unable to breach the Tykes try
line and fly-half Felipe Contepomi missed two of his three penalty attempts all
from similar positions in the opening 15 minutes.
The visitors came back into the game just before the half-hour after a series
of scrums five metres from the Shoguns line. Leeds were awarded a string of
penalties always opting for the scrum.
At the eighth attempt to pack down the Tykes were awarded a penalty try by
referee Steve Lander with centre Braam van Straaten adding the simple
conversion. Contepomi immediately reduced the arrears with his second penalty.
Leeds scored a second try five minutes before the break with fly-half Gordon
Ross giving the scoring pass to number eight Isaac Fea'unati, escaping a poor
tackle from Jamie Williams, to score in the right corner with van Straaten
.adding the conversion.
Then six minutes into time added on at the end of the first half Contepomi
attempted to land his third penalty. Despite the touch judges keeping their
flags down, referee Lander over-ruled them and Bristol went into the break
trailing 14-9.
Bristol should have been in front with the possession they had but seemed to
lack support at the breakdown. They did manage to put in some crunching tackles
that restricted the visitors attacks.
Van Straaten was wide with a penalty attempt early in the second half for the
Tykes and Shoguns acting skipper Daryl Gibson was bundled into touch just short
of the line. Contepomi, kicking into an easing wind, added his fourth penalty
Heavy rain on a bitterly cold afternoon made the conditions difficult. Leeds
increased their lead with 10 minutes to go via a 20-metre drop goal from Ross.
