Harlequins scored the winning try in the dying moments to dispose of Leeds in
the sixth round of the Powergen Cup on Saturday.
The try came with Quins camped deep in Leeds territory when replacement back
row Ace Tiatia got behind the defence, and the ball was moved quickly left with
a long pass from Will Greenwood finding winger Ben Gollings free who dived over
unopposed.
The match had started well for Leeds, who took the lead after six minutes
through Braam Van Straaten with a penalty after good work off a scrum by number
eight Isaac Fea'unati, who drove to within five metres of the Quins line before
the home side were caught off-side.
That lead was doubled three minutes later, with Van Straaten again scoring
after Pat Sanderson was caught handling in the ruck.
Harlequins fly-half Paul Burke put the home side on the scoreboard in the 13th
minute to make it 6-3 with his second penalty attempt after Leeds were found
holding on to the ball in the tackle.
Quins back row Andre Vos left the field with a cut in the 20th minute, and
immediately the absence of the captain was felt.
Leeds picked up a loose ball and moved it quickly to full-back Dan Scarborough
who handed off Gollings and ran 50 metres to the try line to score.
But from then on it was constant pressure from Quins, the forwards driving the
ball through rolling mauls.
The second half was again all Quins, but the Yorkshire side's dogged defence
restricted the hosts to two penalties - with Burke cutting the deficit in the
55th and 72nd minutes.
Quins struggled to overcome stubborn Leeds defence, and despite it looked as
if the visitors would hold on until that final Gollings dive to the line.
