Glasgow produced an heroic all-round display to kick-start their European Cup
Pool 3 campaign - and effectively snuff out the qualification chances of Sale.
Jon Petrie marked his 100th appearance for the Warriors by plunging over for
the clincher in the dying seconds.
Sharks broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. The home defence were caught out
as flanker Stuart Pinkerton was allowed to stroll to the line from 30 metres
out.
With Glasgow struggling to cope with the pace of the visiting back line, they
conceded a further three points via a Nick Walshe penalty.
The kick acted as a much-needed wake-up call for the Warriors and they burst
back into the contest with a touchdown from skipper Jason White.
The conversion was wide on the left, but Tommy Hayes made it look easy as he
narrowed the gap to a single point.
Hayes then attempted a drop-goal, but was rushed into miscuing badly.
He was quickly given the chance to make amends with a penalty from almost 50
metres - and this time the home fans were cheering as they saw their team take
the lead.
Glasgow kept up the impressive momentum to earn another shot at goal from the
same range, but a wider angle. And again Hayes was straight and true with his
kick.
They mounted another series of fierce raids is the interval approached and
Hayes slotted another three vital points to create an eight-point cushion.
Hayes returned to land his fourth penalty - only to see Walshe reply in
identical fashion two minutes later.
And Walshe repeated the dose to set up a dramatic finale.
Glasgow produced heroic defence to stave off a fierce onslaught and then came
the moment that sealed Sale's fate.
Petrie was in the right place at the right time to get the important touch as
the pack powerfully drove through and Hayes added the goal.
