Neath fly-half Lee Jarvis kicked 19 points in an inspired second-half
performance by the Welsh All Blacks who maintained their impressive start and
100 per cent record in the Celtic League.
Jarvis was the architect but Neath had plenty of other heroes as they moved
into strong contention for a quarter-final place.
The Scarlets had led 6-3 after a bruising first half but Neath came out after
the interval, firing on all cylinders, to run out convincing winners.
Llanelli may have won the previous seven encounters between the sides, but
Neath began the match with a visible determination to redress the balance.
The prolific Jarvis, Welsh rugby's leading points scorer last season, opened
his side's account after 15 minutes before Llanelli responded with two
successful Stephen Jones' strikes.
It had been a frantic opening half, littered with errors, and some aimless
kicking with defence, for the most part, dominant.
Neath had enjoyed the better of possession and territory, but they were unable
to make it pay as Llanelli hung onto a three point advantage at the break.
It was a lead that lasted barely three minutes after the restart.
Jarvis found his range once more to level matters, then Neath blasted ahead
with two tries in the space of five minutes. Tongan centre Dave Tieueti did the
initial damage, cutting through some frail midfield tackling from the Llanelli
midfield, before feeding Bristol wing Sean Marsden for a try in the corner.
Jarvis converted and back came Neath once more as flanker Hywel Jenkins romped
under the post for a try he will long remember against his former club, Jarvis
converting again.
Llanelli's misery continued when British Lion number eight Scott Quinnell was
shown a yellow card for persistent offending and the resultant Jarvis kick made
it 23-6 to the home side.
Llanelli did manage some response when they were down to 14 men as
international prop Iestyn Thomas drove over for his first try for his new club
and Jones converted.
But that was as good as it got for last season's European semi-finalists.
Two more Jarvis penalties, one from well inside his own half, put Neath out of
sight to also deny their Pool A rivals a bonus point.
