Leeds Tykes went to the top of the Zurich Premiership table on Saturday after
a well-earned win over Harlequins.
The Tykes, who finished bottom of the pile last season, have now won three
games out of three, including the scalps also of title holders Leicester Tigers
and London Irish.
Harlequins are still without a win and prop up the league.
But it was still a close encounter and it was only in the dying minutes of the
Stoop clash that the outcome was decided.
Fly-half Paul Burke put Quins ahead with an early penalty but Leeds soon
cancelled their score with the first try of the afternoon.
The score came following a sustained period of pressure with Leeds outplaying
Quins.
Scrum-half Derek Hegarty switched the run of play to the left for Braam Van
Straaten to chip ahead.
Full-back Dan Scarborough chased down and scored and South African Van
Straaten converted before adding a penalty.
Harlequins new recruit Bill Satala put the London outfit firmly back in
contention with a 30th minute try.
The score came thanks to winger Ben Gollings who made vital space up field.
A scrum dangerously close to Leeds' goal line put Quins in position to score
with Keith Wood passing out wide to Satala.
Burke converted before adding a drop goal to put the home side ahead at the
break.
But the tables turned again. With just four minutes gone in the second-half
Scarborough put Leeds back in charge with his second try.
Half-time replacement Chris Hall got the momentum going, feeding inside to
George Harder who set Scarborough free.
Van Straaten converted again but then added a phenomenal penalty from 60
metres out.
Again Burke and Van Straaten exchanged penalties before England international
Will Greenwood put the two sides level with just 10 minutes to go.
It was a deserved score for the home side, with Quins finally breaking down
the Tykes defence, Burke adding the extra points.
But Leeds had the final say when Van Straaten put the tykes back in front
again with his fourth penalty before forward Cameron Mather went over to score.
Van Straaten converted to seal his side's third consecutive win this season.
