New Glasgow coach Kiwi Searancke was given a shock as he watched his
ring-rusty Warriors being easily beaten by slick Harlequins at Hughenden.
The London club paved the way for their success with two superb first-half
tries and then clinically killed off the home side with another quickfire double
midway through the second period.
Quins broke the deadlock in the sixth minute when full-back Nathan Williams
went over in the wake of a series of penalties. Paul Burke converted.
Glasgow replied in positive fashion, winning plenty of ball, but they were
unable to turn the good close-quarter work into points.
The visitors, on the other hand, looked lethal every time they had possession
and they stretched their advantage after 23 minutes.
Glasgow's defence was slow to react as scrum-half Matt Powell combined
superbly with Tony Diprose.
And with the markers absent, Powell was left with a stroll to the line. Burke
again added the extra points.
Quins upped the tempo before the interval but a blend of dropped passes and
some resolute Warriors tackling prevented them from inflicting more damage.
But they manufactured a third touchdown 15 minutes after the restart when the
powerful Samoan forward Ace Tiatia was driven over after a penalty line-out.
The conversion was from a tricky angle on the right, but David Slemen made it
look easy as he created a convincing 21-point gap.
And when wing Matt Moore got the first touch to a deft Williams chip two
minutes later, the contest was over.
Glasgow refused to buckle completely and Jason White squeezed over to get them
off the mark, Tommy Hayes converting.
