BRISTOL REPORTS 2001-2002
Picture Brown (left) - tasted defeat in his final game (Allsport)

Wasps 34 Bristol 16

Wasps put daylight between themselves and the Zurich Premiership relegation zone with a deserved victory over midtable Bristol at Loftus Road.

But it was a hugely disappointing day for Bristol winger Spencer Brown who tasted defeat in his final game for Shoguns before retiring to spend time with his sick wife.

Wasps winger Kenny Logan opened up the scoring in the fifth minute with a powerful penalty from Bristol's 22-metre line. Fly-half Felipe Contepomi equalised with a long-range penalty kick.

Plenty of action followed with Wasps number eight Joe Worsley replaced by Simon Cross in the 15th minute with a cut eye. Contepomi was then sin-binned for dissent before Logan saw his penalty attempt sail wide.

Worsley returned in the 23rd minute and that sparked a change of fortune for Wasps as the pack surged forward with winger Shane Roiser touching down having taken a pass from flanker Paul Volley, although Logan failed to convert.

In the 31st minute Contepomi struck a long-range penalty shot, narrowing the deficit to just two points.

Bristol took the lead in the 56th minute thanks to a curling penalty kick from Contepomi.

As Wasps retaliated it was Volley who got his name on the score-sheet in the 60th minute with a try, converted by fly-half Mathew Leek.

In the 64th minute Bristol prop Darren Crompton was sin-binned by referee Steve Lander.

Three minutes later Leek got to a fine loose ball on the right before touching down and then converting his own try.

Samoan hooker Trevor Leota added to Bristol's misery in the 75th minute with a try on the left, converted by Leek.

An injury-time try came from centre Phil Christophers - the conversion coming from Contepomi - followed by a Martin Offiah try.
