Leeds survived a major fright by fallen giants Orrell before clinching a home
tie in the quarter-finals of the Powergen Cup against Newcastle or Wasps.
Orrell, two divisions below their Premiership visitors, rekindled memories of
big-time rugby at Edge Hall Road with a battling performance in an entertaining
sixth-round tie.
The Tykes scored four tries to one to demonstrate their obvious class but they
were never able to relax against the National League Division Two
promotion-chasers, who pushed them all the way.
Orrell, bankrolled by wealthy Wigan businessman Dave Whelan, were bolstered by
the inclusion of Great Britain rugby league centre Gary Connolly, despite only
one training session with his new team-mates.
He provided some nice touches, six years since his previous rugby union
sojourn with Harlequins, while full-back Richard Welding provided more
embarrassment for the Yorkshiremen with a brilliant attacking display.
Leeds, who won away from home for the first time this season, failed to
capitalise on a dream start and suffered badly when Springbok fly-half Bram van
Straaten was sin-binned for a technical foul late in the first half.
Van Straaten, who had been a key figure in the Tykes' blazing start, returned
to impose his considerable influence on the game and how the Tykes needed that.
The South African got giant centre Graham Mackay into his massive stride from
the first line-out and Shaun Woof was in support to touch down for the first of
his two first-half tries.
That came just 41 seconds into the match and Leeds would have had a second try
inside three minutes had scrum-half Chris Kendra managed to hang onto Dan
Scarborough's pass after the right winger had collected van Straaten's lofted
kick.
But Orrell, Cup semi-finalists four times from 1974-94, weathered the early
storm and the 1,300 crowd were cheering what they thought was a try from a
member of the sizeable ex-Wigan contingent, winger Wes Davies, only for referee
Geraint Ashton-Jones to bring him back for a knock-on.
The Lancashire outfit cut the deficit to a single point with a penalty from
full-back Richard Welding and a drop goal from fly-half John Broxson but Woof
went over for his second try on 22 minutes after van Straaten had cleverly
engineered an overlap.
Welding's second penalty kept the home side well in touch and the visitors
were forced to defend desperately as Orrell threatened to cause further
embarrassment, particularly through the probing runs of Welding, number eight
forward Andy Monighan and lively winger Neil Kerfoot.
Leeds were forced to ignore a couple of kickable penalties with van Straaten
out of the action but Orrell were also reduced to 14 men when lock Chas Cusani
was sin-binned for illegal use of the boot just before the break.
Leeds were relieved to see van Straaten return to the action early in the
second half but Orrell were still a man short when they cut the deficit to two
points thanks to Welding's third successful penalty.
The home defence cracked for a third time on 52 minutes following a spell of
sustained pressure when lock Eddie Jones took Ian Clarke's pass to plunge over
the line.
But Orrell's never-say-die attitude paid off five minutes later when their
persistence deservedly brought a first try, even if there was a element of luck
about it.
Broxson hacked the ball on after Leeds passing broke down 30 metres out from
their own line and skipper Andy Craig won the race to the touchdown.
Welding's goal made it 21-19 and set up a thrilling finish.
But van Straaten had the final say when his long pass sent flanker Cameron
Mather tearing over for the Tykes' fourth try on 66 minutes and he kicked his
fourth conversion before exchanging penalties with Welford.
