LEICESTER REPORTS 2001-2002

Leicester 27 Exeter 0

Leicester cruised into the quarter-finals of the Powergen Cup with a comfortable win over part-timers Exeter.

The Tigers were never in danger of slipping up as they booked a quarter-final trip to Harlequins.

But an error-strewn performance only yielded four tries against the National League One side, who lost 76-0 on their last cup visit to Welford Road in 1993.

Leicester boss Dean Richards opted to make nine changes to the starting line-up that beat Bristol Shoguns last week.

They put too much pace on the ball for the minnows in the first quarter of the game, with winger Ollie Smith stretching through a tackle to score in the corner after five minutes and getting a second touchdown in the 18th after Leon Lloyd's inside break.

Andy Goode converted the second and added a 23rd-minute penalty, but the Tigers lost all momentum after that.

Exeter's useful pack drove them towards the Leicester line only for Australian fly-half Chris Malone to miss with a routine penalty-shot goal.

It took Leicester 40 minutes of playing time to score again, Lloyd diving on to chip ahead for his 50th try for the club.

Guy Manson-Bishop's score three minutes later was his first for Leicester and their best of the afternoon.

The whole team handled after stealing the ball on their own line before the number eight touched down in the far left-hand corner.

Malone's kicking had kept Leicester at bay for long spells but Exeter - currently third in their division - only created one half-chance of a score.

The fly-half's chip along the touchline gave Chris Wall a chance of touching-down but he was a yard short of reaching the ball and it slid over the dead-ball line.
