WASPS REPORTS 2001-2002

Wasps 30 Newcastle Falcons 33

Wasps saw their hopes of only a second league win of the season dashed when Newcastle Falcons' Jamie Noon sneaked home a penalty try in the third minute of injury-time.

The London club had opened up the scoring in the first minute when fly-half Alex King slammed through a curling penalty kick from Newcastle's 22-metre line.

Not to be outdone, his opposite number David Walder equalised two minutes later with a similar kick.

Kicking well, Walder lobbed a longer penalty kick through the uprights in the seventh minute.

Putting Wasps on equal footing after a good run of forward play, King kicked his second penalty in the 18th minute from just outside Newcastle's 22-metre area.

But it did not stay like that for long as Walder slammed through another penalty in the 20th minute.

The loss of flanker Rory Jenkins was a blow to Wasps as he went off with blood pouring from his ear in the 22nd minute. He was replaced by Joe Beardshaw but Jenkins returned a few minutes later.

There were scenes of jubilation at Loftus Road as the home fans celebrated King's long-range penalty kick in the 29th minute which put the home side in the lead 12-9.

They piled on the pressure in the second half but it was against the run of play in the 49th minute when lock Doddie Weir scored a try for the Falcons which was converted by Walder.

And Walder did the double in the 60th minute when he converted the try he had scored.

King's successful penalty kicking narrowed the home side's deficit to two points with four minutes remaining and, with one minute to go, he kicked his side into a one-point lead.

Full-back Paul Sampson kicked a drop goal in the 80th minute for Wasps.

But injury-time saw Noon score his match-winning try after running down the right.

It was converted by Walder to add to the gloom of Wasps' poor season.
