Irishman Simon Mason beat Wasps on his own for Treviso with accurate
goalkicking which brought him eight penalties out of 10 attempts.
His pinpoint kicking enabled the Italians to grab their first win of the
season at the fourth time of asking.
The Ulsterman, a former Ireland international, made Wasps pay dearly for their
indiscretions.
Now he would love to repeat the performance in remaining pool games against
two of his old clubs Ulster and Stade Francais.
Full-back Mason cracked his penalties from all over the park to send the 4,000
crowd wild with delight.
Mason was in the mood from the start, kicking over his penalties at regular
intervals.
His measured approach to his penalty-taking brought him five successes before
half-time as Treviso led 15-9 at the break.
Wasps' points came from three penalties from outside half Mathew Leek.
The game opened up after the interval but it was a tremendous show from the
Treviso pack which provided the platform for their win.
Mason added three further penalties but it was not until the final minutes
that they made the game safe with a try from scrum-half Peter Richards.
There was a bonus drop goal from outside half Giacomo Preo while winger Shane
Roiser went over for a Wasps try with Leek landing a fourth penalty.
Man of the match Mason has tasted great success with Ulster and was a key
figure in their previous Heineken Cup campaigns.
He said afterwards: "We will not be getting carried away. We still have games
against Stade Francais and Ulster to come.
"And I would really love to show the door to my old teams. It's nice to give
our fans something to shout about for a change.
"They have really supported us and have been fantastic."
