Australian fly-half Dan Parks orchestrated a memorable win for Leeds in an
error-strewn encounter with Saracens at Headingley today.
Parks, making his home Premiership debut, landed two second-half drop goals
and played a crucial role in clinching the Tykes' first Premiership win since
the opening day.
The 23-year-old worked effectively behind a Leeds pack which dominated from
the kick-off, forcing Saracens into committing uncharacteristic errors in an
increasingly desperate bid to break out of their own half.
The Tykes were tenacious, chasing down the loose ball and on a damp, difficult
surface, Saracens could not settle as they repeatedly surrendered possession.
Passes were dropped or went astray and touch was missed time and again by
South African fly half Luke Smith.
Bereft of options, even England back-row Richard Hill was forced to kick for
touch as the Leeds defence swamped the Londoners.
Meanwhile Parks orchestrated the Leeds attack, working clever chips over the
top and winning key field position, from where his forwards could penetrate.
It was Parks' chip and chase just before the half hour that forced Saracens'
to concede consecutive five-metre scrums.
From the second, Leeds won it against the head - one of three occasions in the
opening half - and drove Saracens back.
Number eight and captain Carl Hogg touched down to give the Tykes a 10-3
lead.
Parks, over on a short term contract from Southern Districts to cover for the
injured Steve Bachop and Richard Le Bas, was only disappointing with boot.
He missed four penalties from eight attempts but in open play he was decisive,
looking to play in wing Dan Scarborough on a number of occasions.
And after 63 minutes he found him with a pinpoint kick through the stretched
Saracens defence.
Scarborough raced onto the ball and dived over unchallenged to give Leeds a
21-14 lead and effectively end Saracens' hopes.
They had come out from the interval with renewed purpose after their dreadful
opening and soon edged into the lead.
After 54 minutes Smith chipped the ball ahead and after a ricochet, full back
Adryn Winnan won the race to touch down.
But with his side 14-13 down, Leeds coach Phil Davies made three changes and
the Tykes continued to carry the game to Saracens.
They were rewarded as Parks landed two drop goals either side of Scarborough's
try to secure a famous win for the Tykes.
