LEICESTER REPORTS 2001-2002

Calvisano 3 Leicester 37

By PA Sport Staff

Leicester director of rugby Dean Richards saw the Tigers chalk up an expected away victory against Italian minnows Calvisano but was disappointed with his side's lacklustre performance in the Heineken Cup pool one match.

The Tigers have made a sound start to the defence of the trophy they won by beating Stade Francais in last year's final - and after two games they have a 100% record.

But Richards was far from satisfied.

"I said before we came here that we were looking for a good performance and I think when we reflect on this over the next few days we will be disappointed," he said.

"We missed a lot of opportunities and made a lot of unforced errors and did not play to our capabilities.

"I'd say it was purely down to ourselves. We knew it was always going to be slightly different because they don't defend in the way other teams defend and we did not take the game by the scruff of the neck."

The Tigers, who beat Llanelli at home last week, were expected to rattle up a hatful of points against Calvisano. But the home side, who are coached by New Zealander Craig Green, defended well and were well organised.

Leicester scored five tries through winger Freddie Tuilagi, young scrum-half Harry Ellis, Neil Back (two) and Austin Healey. Full-back Tim Stimpson converted three and also kicked two penalties.

Calvisano opened the scoring with a sixth-minute penalty from Kelly Rolleston, who missed two in the middle of the first half.

But they did not score again - and after Stimpson had kicked a 12th-minute penalty he came into the line for Leicester's first try in Europe this season, scored by Tuilagi.

Stimpson added the conversion and then kicked a penalty before Ellis squeezed over for the second try following a line-out seven minutes from half-time.

Back scored two from line-outs and drives in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, and near the end Healey - who had replaced the injured Ellis - scored the best try of the match from fully 50 yards out before saving a try from a Calvisano side who with better finishing might have had a couple of tries.
