Diego Dominguez steered Stade Francais to a crucial Heineken Cup victory at
Loftus Road after injury-hit Wasps were left cursing Kenny Logan's poor
goalkicking.
While Italian Test fly-half Dominguez, second behind Neil Jenkins on the
Heineken Cup all-time point-scoring list, booted six penalties and a conversion
of wing Thomas Lombard's solo 64th minute try, Logan's accuracy proved woeful.
The Scottish international missed six shots at goal, letting slip 16
potential points that would undoubtedly have given Wasps a surprise win.
Stade, beaten by Leicester in last season's Heineken Cup final, are
determined to go one better this time around, and with Dominguez again running
the show, they would look to have every chance.
Wasps, minus injured England star Lawrence Dallaglio, fly-half Alex King and
flanker Paul Volley, competed bravely, but were ultimately undone by Dominguez'
relentless points-scoring ability.
Stade went through a rocky patch just after half-time when their England
flanker Richard Pool-Jones was sin-binned for a high tackle on Wasps' New
Zealand prop Craig Dowd, conceding a try and penalty during the 10 minutes he
was off the field.
Full-back Josh Lewsey's try and a Logan penalty brought Wasps back to 15-14
adrift, but when Lombard left three home defenders in his wake on 64 minutes,
there was no way back.
Dowd was among three Wasps forwards who went off for treatment to cuts - lock
Simon Shaw and prop Will Green also required treatment - and their play
sometimes lacked direction minus the massively influential Dallaglio.
Stade are now the clear favourites to clinch a quarter-final place from pool
two, given that three of their remaining five group games are in Paris, and
Wasps might be left to rue Logan's deficiencies long into this European
campaign.
Dominguez struck three penalties during the opening 20 minutes, and two more
kicks before the break meant that Stade held a 15-6 interval lead.
Logan continued to miss the target, but Wasps were given a new lease of life
when Lewsey collected fly half Matt Leek's long pass for a well-worked
50th-minute touchdown.
With Pool-Jones still off the field, Logan then completed his penalty
hat-trick and Stade suddenly needed to lift their game.
Typically though, with such individual flair in their teams, the moment of
magic came from Lombard who weaved his way through a heavily congested midfield
to touch down near the posts.
Dominguez converted and struck a 75th-minute penalty, giving him 20 points
from seven out of eight successful kicks, and Logan's injury-time try was
nothing more than a consolation.
Wasps, whose latest signing New Zealander Ian Jones, was substituted after 54
minutes, will take heart from a battling display, but if you don't take your
chances against a team of Stade's quality then defeat is the only end result.
