WASPS REPORTS 2001-2002

Harlequins 33 Wasps 13

Harlequins recorded their first Premiership win of the season with a commanding victory over a disorganised Wasps at The Stoop.

Quins, who finally seem to have found their form after a dismal start to the season, asserted their authority with five penalties from the boot of fly-half Paul Burke in the first 25 minutes.

Wasps were then to go a man down after Matthew Leek was sin-binned for arguing with the referee and it was only a 37th minute penalty by Paul Sampson that salvaged some pride for the visitors by putting three points on the board before the break.

Winger Matt Moore continued to follow up Quins' charge when he touched down on the right-wing after 39 minutes.

Again Wasps were at fault with the Loftus Road club being penalised because of a wayward throw from Phil Greening from the line-out which was desperately close to Wasps' goalline.

Tony Diprose superbly picked up the ball from the scrum to pass the ball out wide and gift Moore with his first try of the season and hand Quins a 20-3 lead at the break.

Following two further Burke penalties, giving Harlequins a 20-point cushion, Wasps finally bounced back with a penalty and their first try of the afternoon by winger Josh Lewsey who surged his way through Quins' defence for a soft try. Leek converted to reduce the deficit to 13 points.

But it was too little too late for Wasps with Quins once again demonstrating their superiority with a Mark Mapletoft converted try in injury time.
