Bristol cruised to an empathic victory over Newbury as they scored 12 tries in
their final pre-season friendly before the start of the new Premiership campaign
on September 2, when Sale Sharks visit the Memorial Stadium.
The hosts dominated the first half, running in four tries against the National
Division Two side, who struggled to avoid relegation last season before the
return of former Gloucester coach Keith Richardson.
Scrum-half Agustin Pichot and former England lock Garath Archer both scored
two tries with Pichot's fellow Argentinian international Felipe Contepomi
landing four conversions and a penalty.
But Newbury did not allow the Premiership club to have it all their own way,
despite trailing 31-14 at the interval.
Flanker John Porter, on loan from Bristol, and wing Kieron McCormick both
scored tries, with fly-half Jonathan Martin, on trial from Clifton, converting
both.
Pichot and Archer completed their hat-tricks within 10 minutes of the restart,
while England wing David Rees raced away from just inside his own half, stepping
inside a couple of tackles along the way, to score under the posts.
Contepomi converted all three, but his next two attempts after Rees had scored
his second try in the left corner, and Pichot scored his fourth try in the right
corner.
But he made no mistake when he converted his own score.
Pichot, looking his sharpest ever, scored his fifth after England tourist
Andrew Sheridan gave him the scoring pass.
The former England under-21 player then completed the scoring when he shrugged
off a tackle to land Bristol's final try. Contepomi converted both to take his
tally for the afternoon to 28 points.
