GLOUCESTER REPORTS 2000-2001
Picture Jason Little looks to lay the ball off for Gloucester.

Gloucester 50 Rotherham 17

Teenager James Simpson-Daniel led the way as Gloucester eased their current problems by crushing Rotherham to end a run of five League defeats.

Still only 18, James has not yet played a full game for Gloucester but the England Under-19 fly-half made the most of his chance when Tom Beim was injured after getting the first of Gloucester's four first-half tries.

Gloucester showed more vigour than of late and with full-back Chris Catlin often joining the line they punched big holes in the Rotherham defence.

Good running and handling brought Catlin a try and then Simpson-Daniel showed his pace. He laid on a try for Mark Cornwall and then struck himself, scorching 60 metres for a solo effort.

Simon Mannix kicked a penalty and three conversions for Gloucester to have it sewn up by half-time.

Rotherham mounted a fightback at the start of the second half with some good open play sending Michael Wood over. Mike Umaga added the conversion.

More open play gave Gloucester more reminders of how dangerous Rotherham could be and slipshod tackling enabled Simon Binns to get free for a second Rotherham try which Umaga converted.

Gloucester quickly restored order with heavy pressure and a penalty try and then Jason Little eased his way over for another try.

Simpson-Daniel sparked off another exciting dash from just outside the Gloucester 25 leading to a first try for Robert Todd who was making his Premiership debut after breaking his ankle in the pre-season matches.

With Mannix converting two and Byron Hayward one, Gloucester reached the 50-point mark.

Rotherham always worked hard and stretched the Gloucester defence at times but in the end lacked real penetration.
