Newcastle Falcons outside-half Dave Walder sent Saracens crashing to defeat
with a magnificent individual performance in a thrilling clash at Kingston
Park.
The 22-year-old scored all his side's points with a flawless kicking display
as the visitors' indiscipline inside their own half was ruthlessly punished.
And his efforts were not confined to success with the boot as he touched down
for two tries to round off a fine day's work.
But Saracens played their part with full-back Gerald Arasa and Scotland second
row Scott Murray touching down in a pulsating encounter that was there for the
taking until the final whistle.
Walder gave Falcons a second minute lead with a penalty from close to the
right touch-line.
Newcastle continued to push forward and, following a passage of attacking play
which saw outside centre Jamie Noon make two incisive breaks, Saracens conceded
another penalty which Walder slotted over.
Walder increased the lead further with another penalty and by the 12th minute
Falcons were 9-0 ahead.
But the visitors struck back with a superb try which started in their own half
as winger Richard Haughton sprinted down the right wing before off-loading to
Kris Chesney.
Arnold spilled the ball when he was tackled just short of the line but Murray
was on hand to scoop it up and touch down. Duncan McRae kicked the conversion.
Walder ripped open the Saracens defence in the 26th minute for a fine
individual try which he converted before Arasa crashed over for the visitors
four minutes later. McRae added the two points to take the score to 16-14.
But Walder then kicked two penalties in quick succession as Newcastle finished
the first half 22-14 ahead.
Arasa ghosted over in the 49th minute for a five-pointer converted by McRae as
Saracens began to fight back but Calder slotted over another three points
moments later.
McRae kicked a penalty before Walder rounded off a sweeping Newcastle move
with a try which he converted to give Newcastle a 32-24 lead.
Falcons substitute Stuart Grimes was sin-binned in the 69th minute for a
professional foul and McRae slotted over the ensuing penalty.
But despite laying siege to the Newcastle line in the dying moments, Saracens
were unable to add to their score again as the home side held on thanks to a
spectacular defensive effort.
