HARLEQUINS REPORTS 2000-2001

Harlequins 13 Leicester 16

Leicester fullback Tim Stimpson gave England coach Clive Woodward a gentle reminder by scoring all 16 points against Harlequins to send the Tigers to the top of the Zurich Premiership.

Stimpson topped a solid performance with a try four minutes from time to sink Quins, who had led 13-9.

Quins lost Ireland hooker Keith Wood in the 20th minute but their pack held firm and they made a mockery of their lowly league standing.

The Tigers became embroiled in several feuds which resulted in lock Ben Kay and former England prop Darren Garforth being sent to the sin bin along with Quins winger Ed Jennings.

The Tigers should have capitalised on a series of unforced Harlequins errors as they pinned the home side on their tryline but ill discipline meant they left the field at the break 10-0 down.

A stunning try by Australian flanker David Wilson handed the Stoop outfit an undeserved lead on 23 minutes as the home side took advantage of a rare foray into enemy territory.

On loan fly-half Alex Lawson marked his last appearance at the Stoop before returning to Llanelli with an intricate sidestep to create the opening for Wilson. Niall Woods, who had landed a penalty earlier in the half, converted the try.

Leicester lacked creativity behind the scrum and needed a 58th-minute penalty from Stimpson to keep them in the game after Woods had extended the home side's advantage with a penalty.

The Tigers thought they have moved to within five points of Quins on 65 minutes when centre Leon Lloyd broke 60 yards before releasing wing Geordan Murphy to charge over but referee Steve Layshom called Leicester back for a forward pass.

Stimpson continued to chip away at the Quins lead and two further penalties midway through the second half bought the Tigers to within touching distance of their hosts at 13-9.

And, with Quins tiring in the closing stages, Stimpson snatched victory, breaking a tackle to plunge over and adding the conversion.
