Leicester did all that was required to maintain their unbeaten Heineken
European Cup record and get revenge for defeat at McDiarmid Park by the Reds
last season.
The Leicester pack were comfortably in control and the Reds suffered from not
being able to make anything of early chances, not helped by poor decision
making.
The first half finished with Leicester 17-10 ahead, although the Reds opened
brightly but could make nothing of their chances.
Tommy Hayes, having goaled a penalty in the first minute, went on to miss
three other attempts.
When Leicester blocked an effort that came off an upright, the Reds could then
not make anything of the scrum on the Leicester line.
Leicester looked more poised and took the lead after 13 minutes through centre
Leon Lloyd's try after right winger Gordean Murphy had done the damage. Tim
Stimpson converted and then added a penalty.
Murphy was in the build-up to the second try. The Reds lost the line-out on
their line and the Leicester attack ended with Neil Back scoring and Stimpson
converting.
The Reds responded with a big effort and, after Leicester hooker Dorian West
had been sin-binned, Gordon Simpson got over and Hayes converted.
Leicester eased themselves into the second half with a penalty from man of the
match Stimpson after just two minutes.
Stimpson and Hayes exchanged penalties in the middle of the half before
Leicester put in a late push. Stimpson conjured a try from nothing, shooting
among a tangle of Glasgow legs to touch down a ball threaded through by Leon
Lloyd.
The Reds were left with a consolation try from Gavin Scott, but their European
hopes lay in tatters.
