GLOUCESTER REPORTS 2000-2001

Gloucester 38 Bristol 16

Gloucester's 27-point blitz in the second half had Bristol reeling after they had been in front at half-time.

Two tries from Australian centre Jason Little on his debut and some more superb kicking from Simon Mannix with 18 points from four penalties and three conversions did the trick.

But Gloucester had again got off to a poor start conceding a fifth minute try to Bristol hooker Barry Williams.

When Chris Fortey was penalised for an unnecessary shove on Agustin Pichot, Bristol drove well from the following line-out for Williams to make the line.

Mannix took Gloucester to within a point with two penalties only for Stephen Vile to add to his earlier conversion with two good penalties for Bristol.

Wallaby star Little then marked his Gloucester debut with a try when he finished off a period of intense attacking play in the 30th minute. Mannix put the conversion wide, his first failure in 12 shots at goal following his nine successes last week.

Vile then showed him the way with his third penalty for Bristol to lead 16-11 at half time.

Gloucester were a changed team after the interval and were in front within a minute when Olivier Azam got over after a good drive from a line-out.

When Terry Fanolua replaced Joe Ewens on the wing he was an immediate success. His break gifted Little his second try.

With Mannix adding more points from the boot Gloucester's biggest cheer went to Phil Vickery who broke free and the England prop ran 35 metres to score.

Despite the size of their win Gloucester were still made to work hard with Mannix and Chris Catling producing some try-saving tackles.

The tackling was severe on both sides and Mannix strolled over for what seemed to be another try as two major punch-ups were taking place but referee Nigel Yates, after consulting both touch judges, penalised Gloucester.
