Coach John Steele got the boost he was looking for with European champions
Northampton finally breaking down the London Irish defence.
"We needed a bit of confidence," said Steele. "We had lost last weekend and
the guys are anxious to do well again this year.
"At times they were a little bit tense but we relaxed in the second half and
we looked a lot better."
He added: "We were disappointing in the first half when we had a lot of
possession and territory but we were not direct enough.
"We were far more physical and confrontational at the breakdown in the second
half. We could have had a couple of more tries but they were very well organised
in defence.
"We will settle for that, we are not on our game yet and we know we aren't
but that second half and the win gives us something to build on."
Fit-again England winger Ben Cohen scored two second tries on his comeback in
front of former Prime Minister John Major, a surprise visitor in the stand.
Cohen said: "It's nice to come back at home and score a couple of tries. It
is still early in the season and I don't think there's much to worry about. It's
going to take a couple of games to get into the season."
