HARLEQUINS REPORTS 2000-2001

Harlequins 26 Rotherham 13

A fine second-half display from Harlequins condemned Premiership new boys Rotherham to their second successive defeat and earned Quins their first win in the Zurich Premiership.

After a first half which matched the gloomy weather, Quins stepped up a gear and after some resolute first-half defending, the Yorkshiremen had no answer to the home side.

The first period was dominated by defences but Quins did not need to wait long - Paul Burke, Will Greenwood and Steve White-Cooper combined in the seventh minute, White-Cooper receiving the final pass from former Leicester centre Greenwood to touch down in the corner.

Rotherham hit back with two penalties, converted by Mike Umaga, to bring themselves to within one point at half-time.

Just a minute into the second half, Quins stretched out their lead with a second try. Daren O'Leary received the ball from replacement Mart Mapletoft to steal in at the corner.

Greenwood scored the best try of the game in the 50th minute after being set up brilliantly by skipper Keith Wood who pierced the Rotherham defence to send Greenwood unchallenged under the posts.

Nine minutes from time, Nick Greenstock scored try number four for the home side when he received Nick Burrows' long pass out to the right, Greenstock injecting his pace down the flank to touch down at the corner.

The visitors bagged a late consolation when replacement Jim Thorp converted some late Rotherham pressure, touching down from a ruck in front of the posts to reduce the arrears.
