Result: Southland 16 Lions 26

80 min: Southland transgress from the restart and O'Gara pumps into touch, bringing an end to the game. The Lions have run out 26-16 winners but they've hardly been at the fluent best against a brave opposition. Henson has done his Test chances no harm at all with a man-of-the-match display that has given Sir Clive Woodward food for thought.

80 min: PENALTY - O'GARA. O'Gara slots over.

79 min: The ball goes wide far too slowly and Southland have men across but there's a penalty for offside in front of the posts. O'Gara will go for three - and will surely get them.

78 min: The Lions work their crossfield kick again and Cueto makes ground before flicking inside to D'Arcy. He recycles and first Shanklin then Henson make little bursts in midfield. Southland looking stretched.

77 min: Southland have to look expansively but there's a knock-on out wide and it'll be a Lions scrum just outside the Southland 22. Surely they will be able to keep things tight for a couple of minutes here.

76 min: Ball turned over yet again by Southland as Henson is caught in possession. Plenty of support around him but the Southland forwards are scenting an unlikely draw here.

75 min: The Lions bring on Gordon D'Arcy for Murphy while Southland bring Rees Logan on for Hua Tamariki.

74 min: PENALTY - APANUI. Apanui punishes Sheridan's indiscipline.

73 min: Penalty to Southland as Sheridan is pinged for failing to roll away from the tackle. Southland check the time remaining and then go for the posts.

72 min: Murphy does well to scramble back onto a clever chip over the top from Te Whare and get back to his feet quickly enough before being swallowed up. The ball is worked back to Murphy and he finds a good touch down the left. Nervy times for the Lions despite their lead.

71 min: PENALTY - O'GARA. O'Gara slots over the penalty.

70 min: Bulloch finds his man at the line-out but it's messy thereafter. Southland look to have turned it over up front but they've done so illegally with Muliaina penalised. O'Gara will go for the three points.

69 min: A quick tap-and-go from Apanui puts the Lions on the back foot but it's just spilt forward at the crucial moment and then Southland transgress. O'Gara hoists a huge kick down the left. Cusiter and Cowan are engaged in a little handbags off the ball but the referee calms tempers well.

68 min: Southland carry the ball forward well from deep and make progress past the Lions 10m line when Easterby is penalised for using hands on the floor.

67 min: Marvellous kick from Murphy as he switches play from inside the Lions half to the Southland 22.

66 min: Hickie tries an arcing run around the left but Harrison is always with him and drags him over the touchline. Hickie should really have flicked it inside to Murphy there.

65 min: Bulloch seems to have caught the line-out bug as he overthrows and Southland gather possession. That's the fourth one that's gone against the Lions throw. Fortunately for the Lions, Southland cough up possession.

64 min: The Lions bring Simon Easterby on for Michael Owen.

63 min: PENALTY - APANUI. Apanui punishes Henson.

62 min: Nice interplay from the Southland backs as Te Whare and Harrison link up out wide, taking play into the Lions 22. The ball is recycled a couple of times before Henson is penalised for a blatant shoulder charge on Quate. Anapui is going for the posts.

61 min: PENALTY - O'GARA. As expected, the Irishman slots it over.

60 min: Murch is penalised for offside as the Lions make a move on the short side. It's eminently kickable and O'Gara should be confident as he steps up.

60 min: Southland bring on Pehi Te Whare for Milne.

59 min: T-Pole gathers the ball at the back of the line-out with his feet on the ground and Southland try to hit at the heart of the Lions' defence. The ball breaks out nicely for O'Gara, though, from a T-Pole pass and he volleys it forward. Milne gathers initially but then knocks on.

58 min: Tempers flare in the front row after Sheridan is pinged for not driving straight. It's quickly calmed and Anapui finds touch down the right.

57 min: Southland bring David Hall on for Rutledge.

57 min: Having recycled through five or six phases with some excellent offloads, the Lions' attack falters as O'Callaghan loses the ball forwards in contact.

56 min: Murphy struggles under the high ball as Apanui hoists it forward but the Irishman gathers at the second attempt. Shanklin shows his value by breaking out of the 22 towards halfway and the ball is recycled well. The Lions look rejuvenated.

55 min: CONVERSION - O'GARA. O'Gara converts from in front.

54 min: TRY - HENSON. The Lions get the chance to show their supposed dominance up front and do just that by taking play to just shy of the tryline. It's recycled well and Cusiter goes digging. He finds O'Gara who in turn flicks it on to Henson and he shows good power to go over.

53 min: Penalty to the Lions as Rutledge is penalised at the line-out. The Lions - through O'Gara - dab the ball into touch down the left.

52 min: Titterrell finds O'Callaghan at the line-out and suddenly the Lions' play looks to have stepped up a gear. Henson finds a gap and flicks it back to Shanklin but Murphy's pass out towards Cueto is gathered one-handed by T-Pole in superb fashion. The ball is worked to Apanui and he finds touch.

51 min: Southland bring Jayden Murch on for Aaron Dempsey.

50 min: Sheridan makes an impact with two bullocking runs up front that leave Southland forwards hanging off him. The ball is worked to O'Gara and he chips a kick into touch down the right. Looked a nervous kick that one, hardly making any ground.

50 min: That's Cooper's last act and Titterrell is also coming off. Chris Cusiter and Gordon Bulloch are their replacements.

49 min: Southland's line-out throw goes astray this time and Cooper shows a cool head by finding a good touch down the right with not much space to cope with.

49 min: The Lions bring Tom Shanklin on for Smith, meaning an all-Welsh centre combination.

48 min: The Lions manage to scramble the restart back on their side but Williams gets isolated. Penalty to Southland and Apanui finds a great touch down the left.

47 min: CONVERSION - APANUI. Apanui levels the scores by converting.

46 min: TRY - T-POLE. Unsurprisingly Southland go for the catch and drive given the field position and it works a treat with T-Pole thundering over to the delight of the home crowd.

45 min: Titterrell finds his man at the line-out but a poor pass puts Henson in trouble in midfield and Southland suddenly break down the short side. T-Pole then sends a lovely chip into the corner which Hickie has to gather. He's forced over the touchline for a Southland line-out just five metres out.

44 min: Southland are penalised for pulling down at the line-out with O'Callaghan crashing to the ground and O'Gara finds touch.

43 min: The line-out goes awry and a couple of clever kicks from Southland pin the Lions back into their own 22. Hickie is back to gather and has to pump into touch down the right. From a position of strength the Lions are now on the back foot.

42 min: There's a penalty to the Lions at the scrum as Sheridan has an immediate impact on Dempsey. O'Gara pumps the ball into touch down the left.

41 min: O'Gara pumps a powerful kick down the right from the restart, finding touch on halfway. Good tackling from the Lions draws a knock-on from Muliaina in midfield and it's a Lions scrum.

40 min: Southland restart with Apanui hoisting a big kick skywards. Andrew Sheridan is on for the Lions with Stevens making way in the front row.

HT: Southland 3 British and Irish Lions 10.

40 min: Apanui slides the penalty wide with the last kick of the half. The Lions are leading at the break but it's not as convincing as it should be with precision and control lacking.

40 min: Southland get the chance for the last score of the half as Murphy tries to bring the ball out from full-back and throws a bad pass to Hickie. He knocks on and Harrison carries into contact with Smith. The Leicester Tigers man won't roll away and it's a Southland penalty.

39 min: O'Gara pins back Southland with a lovely kick from the scrum, finding touch down the left. The Lions initially worked it wide but Cooper's pass was behind Cueto.

38 min: Miller has been forced off, with what appears to be an injury to his right leg. That's a huge blow for Southland. Jeff Wright is Miller's replacement.

37 min: Brave gathering from T-Pole under huge pressure from Moody yet again. Southland try to move the ball wide but Williams forces a knock-on in midfield and it's a scrum for the Lions.

36 min: The Lions opt for a 22 drop-out to restart.

35 min: O'Gara hoists a high kick from the line-out that Wilson gathers. He finds Lotawa and it's a first chance for the winger to show off his pace. He is first to the ball when it drops but can only get a desperate boot to it which he diverts over the deadball line.

34 min: Southland's confidence looks to have been boosted by the Lions' travails and Cowan attempts a burst around the back of a line-out. It's recycled well but there's a poor pass from Faolua Muliaina and it sails over Bryan Milne and behind Harrison. Lions line-out.

33 min: The coaches will be fuming on the touchline as first Southland turn over, then the Lions do it, then Southland do it. That's five successive turnovers at the breakdown. Both sides are struggling with the basics at the moment.

32 min: More turnover ball from Southland as Titterrell is caught a little isolated from the line-out but then the Lions repeat the dose with a turnover of their own.

31 min: O'Gara flicks the ball out towards Murphy but it's a terrible pass and the full-back knocks on with the ball at his bootlaces. Again Southland look to kick when the ball emerges from the scrum on their side and it's a decent touch down the left from Cowan.

30 min: Titterrell again finds his man at the line-out but Shaw is pinged for obstruction as the drive comes. It's the old 'truck and trailer' routine with O'Callaghan on the drive and Shaw blocking.

29 min: The Lions go for the catch-and-drive from the line-out and look to rumble on. The maul is pulled down illegally and O'Gara again dabs a penalty into touch down the left.

28 min: O'Gara dabs the ball into touch down the left.

27 min: Southland are looking to kick far too soon in their possession and this time they even miss touch. Moody bursts down the left into a small gap to take play to the 22 but the Southland defence holds firm with the Lions looking somewhat static in their movements. There is a penalty, though, as Miller has again been penalised this time on the brink of the 22.

26 min: The Lions use their crossfield kick again with O'Gara picking out Hickie out wide. He runs at Mana Harrison but is eventually dragged down. Wilson looks to burst forward down the blind side as Southland turn it over but he's forced out. Hickie knocked on in any case so the hosts will restart play.

25 min: O'Gara has the distance on the kick but just allows it to fade to the right.

24 min: Titterrell looks to jink around Miller on halfway but is brought to ground by a tackle around the neck. Miller is admonished by the referee as the Lions have a penalty.

23 min: Southland try to work a move on the short side from the scrum but the Lions are alert to the danger and halt it on halfway. Southland do manage to recycle it once but then Shaw gets hands in to grapple the ball back onto the Lions' side. Again there's something approaching an overlap out on the left but again it peters out.

22 min: An overlap emerges after the line-out as O'Gara flicks a lovely pass out towards the midfield but Ollie Smith knocks on with at least one man spare outside him. The Southland midfield had been dragged inside by O'Gara's delayed pass.

21 min: Titterrell finds Shaw at the line-out and the Lions try to rumble towards the tryline. Southland hold firm so the Lions look to use their backs but the ball is turned over - an ongoing problem on this tour - and James Wilson is able to find a hurried touch.

20 min: The Lions get a rolling maul going from the line-out before looking expansively. Henson and Cueto both make 10m bursts to take play well into Southland territory when Paul Miller is penalised for coming in from the side at the ruck. O'Gara finds touch down the right.

19 min: Quate is agan the man the line-out is aimed at and he does well to slap down to Jimmy Cowan. The ball is worked through two pairs of hands before Apanui finds touch down the right.

18 min: Apanui finds a safe touch down the left.

17 min: It's the sort of restart chasing we've come to expect from Moody as he lays Hale T-Pole out with a thundering tackle from O'Gara's high hit. The ball comes back on the Lions side but Moody has been penalised for not rolling away from the tackle. T-Pole - unsurprisingly - stays down and needs a moment or two to catch his breath.

16 min: PENALTY - APANUI. Apanui slots over the penalty to punish Moody's indiscretion.

15 min: Jason Rutledge picks out Daniel Quate at the line-out and Southland again look to make an impression in the tight. There's a penalty coming with Moody penalised for coming in from the side - so Apanui just kicks the ball away to trigger the decision. Surely three points for Southland here.

14 min: The restart is worked to O'Gara and he pumps it into touch down the right. The Irishman is looking confident after his early place-kick success. Southland get to work in the tight but O'Callaghan puts a stray hand in at the ruck allowing Apanui to find touch down the left.

13 min: CONVERSION - O'GARA. O'Gara slots over the conversion.

12 min: TRY - HENSON. The Lions recycle the ball well through the forwards to take play up to the Southland 22 before Hickie spots a gap and goes for it. Donnacha O'Callaghan is quickly in to take play up to the tryline. He's held up but when the ball is flicked back inside Henson steps inside and shows good strength to touch down.

11 min: The Lions turn the ball over up front and immediately get the pressure on.

10 min: Henson and Mark Cueto link up nicely down the Lions' right but when the ball reaches Martyn Williams he just spills it forward in contact so it's a Southland put-in at the scrum.

9 min: Titterrell overthrows at the line-out this time but it's scrappy stuff from Southland and they quickly kick the ball back to the Lions.

8 min: Andy Titterrell hits his man at the line-out and the ball is quickly shipped to O'Gara. He hoists a kick over the Southland defence out to the right but Watisoni Lotawa gets back well and carries it forward. A kicking battle develops until Lotawa finds touch down the left.

7 min: Apanui sends another great kick down the right after the restart is worked into his hands. The Southland fly-half certainly has a big boot.

6 min: PENALTY - O'GARA. O'Gara steps up and slots over the penalty.

5 min: The Lions work the ball through several phases before working it out wide. Henson flocks a lovely ball to Geordan Murphy but he opts to go rather than shipping it on to Denis Hickie. Murphy is held up but Apanui is offside so it's a kickable penalty for the Lions.

4 min: The Lions disrupt the Southland line-out with Lewis Moody getting a hand in. Southland have been adjudged to have knocked on so it's a scrum to the Lions. Southland are penalised as Clarke Dermody loses his binding.

3 min: Apanui drags his penalty across the posts from out on the right. Gavin Henson tries to restart play quickly with a little dab kick but he's forced over the touchline. Clever play for the Welshman there, although it didn't come off.

2 min: Southland pull off a catch-and-drive from the Lions and do superbly to take play to just outside the Lions 22. There's some brutal rucking from the Southland men with Matt Stevens getting the treatment. He's on the wrong side so must expect it, and it's a penalty to Southland.

1 min: The first phase of play sees Simon Shaw caught offside at a maul and Richard Apanui pumps the ball into touch down the right, pegging the Lions back into their half.

0 min: The Lions get things under way in front of a passionate crowd.
