RESULT: NEW ZEALAND 21 LIONS 3

80 min: Carter dabs the ball into touch and that's the last act of the game. The Lions have been well and truly outclassed in all facets of the game and the All Blacks are deserved winners. There are still two Tests to go but the Lions have it all to do.

79 min: The Lions put the ball in the scrum but the All Blacks get the penalty.

78 min: The All Blacks have lost their set piece superiority since Witcombe came on. This time his line-out throw goes adrift and it'll be a Lions put-in.

77 min: The Lions win good line-out ball but Thompson's offload is gathered by replacement Witcombe. He recycles and Carter chips a lovely kick forward which Mauger just can't gather. Lewsey picks up and pumps a great kick downfield, taking play into the New Zealand 22.

76 min: The ball falls nicely to Muliana but his fly-kick goes out on the full. The All Blacks bring Sione Lauaki on for Collins as they ring the changes with the clock ticking down.

75 min: Derren Witcombe replaces Mealamu and Rico Gear comes on for Umaga.

74 min: Carter's kick misses by a long way to the left as conditions worsen. Matt Dawson is into the fray for his sixth Lions Test, with Peel departing.

73 min: The All Blacks look to trundle towards the Lions 22 and Ryan Jones loses his head and goes in from the side to gift the All Blacks a penalty. Carter is going for the posts.

73 min: Good line-out ball for the All Blacks with Jack taking his 10th line-out of the night - that's as many as all of the Lions jumpers combined have won!

72 min: New Zealand win their own line-out ball but the Lions are able to turn it over up front. It's worked to Wilkinson and his kick finds touch around halfway.

71 min: Wilkinson pumps the ball into touch down the left.

70 min: Free-kick to the Lions as New Zealand transgress in the front row.

70 min: New Zealand bring Mils Muliaina on for MacDonald, who like Marshall has been excellent.

69 min: Kelleher goes from his first scrum but he knocks on in contact. Lions put-in on their own 5m line.

68 min: New Zealand have replaced the impressive Marshall and Woodcock with Byron Kelleher and Greg Somerville.

67 min: The ABs show the Lions how to do it by working it inside before Marshall bursts around from right to left. He slides it out to Mauger who kicks superbly down the line and forces Thomas to kick it out for a New Zealand line-out.

66 min: O'Connell manages to tap the line-out back on the Lions' side but within two phases they've been forced back 15m by the All Blacks' superb defence. After meandering through three or four more phases the ball is worked to Wilkinson but his kick is straight to Howlett.

65 min: MacDonald finds touch down the right but it's a conservative kick given it'll be a Lions throw at the line-out. Perhaps the ABs are confident of upsetting Thompson's throwing.

64 min: MacDonald gets back well to take a kick over the top from Wilkinson and marks it inside his own 22.

63 min: Marshall tries to chip over the Lions' defence but his kick is out on the full from outside his own 22. Lewsey takes it quickly and goes but the New Zealanders turn it over at the ruck and work it out to Howlett. He is tackled and recycles but Marshall can only fling it infield as he is carried out of play and the Lions turn it over.

62 min: The Lions take too long getting their scrum organised and getting the ball in and it's a free-kick to the ABs. The weather is getting worse by the minute but the New Zealanders are showing no signs of letting up.

61 min: Thompson finds his man at the line-out and Stephen Jones hoists a kick ahead. The ball is knocked on by MacDonald and it'll be a put-in to the Lions at the scrum just outside the New Zealand 22. Great chasing from Wilkinson and Greenwood there.

60 min: Mealamu is again spot on at the line-out but the penalty comes to the Lions as New Zealand are pinged at the first ruck that follows the set-piece. There are a few handbags with Corry and Collins involved but the referee has seen enough to know it's nothing too serious.

60 min: Carter chips the ball into touch down the right.

59 min: Mealamu shows Thompson just how to do it at the line-out by picking out his man but the Lions get the turnover ball. Back holds on in the tackle, though, and it's a New Zealand penalty. Hill has just returned to the Lions bench on crutches.

58 min: Lewsey is given an early test in his new full-back role but does well to get back and gather a Carter kick over the top before finding touch on halfway.

57 min: Thompson, Grewcock and Shane Horgan are on, with Byrne, Kay and Robinson making way. The three players who have departed have simply not been at the races.

56 min: Steve Thompson and Danny Grewcock are stripped and ready for action.

55 min: PENALTY - WILKINSON. Wilkinson puts the Lions on the board.

54 min: The Lions get a huge shove on from the scrum and manage to force a penalty as McCaw holds on after being forced to go from the base. That's better from the Lions...and they are going for the three points.

53 min: Byrne again fails to find his line-out man and the ball scrambles out for a New Zealand line-out. It's scrappy from the ABs but they manage to get the ball back on their side and they get the go-forward so get the put-in when a pile-up develops.

52 min: Collins breaks his binding too early at the scrum and Wilkinson is able to pump the ball into touch down the left. It's a Lions line-out in All Blacks territory as the hail lashes down.

51 min: Yet another handling error from the Lions as Stephen Jones knocks on in contact. It's tough tackling from the All Blacks - Umaga this time - but there's simply too many mistakes.

50 min: The ball is worked to Stephen Jones but his kick fails to find touch. MacDonald does likewise with his return kick, as does Robinson. Credit to the Sale man, though, he has chased down his own kick and forced New Zealand to recycle and Collins has to dab a kick into touch down the left as the attack falters.

49 min: New Zealand make it back into the Lions half from the restart as Williams powers forward after giving a powerful hand-off to Peel. The ball is knocked on by So'oialo, though, so the Lions have a chance to breath as they get the put-in at the scrum.

48 min: CONVERSION - CARTER. Carter adds the extras. If any try deserved to be a seven-pointer it was that one.

47 min: TRY - SIVIVATU. The All Blacks work a lovely move through their backs with Mauger and Umaga running lovely lines to leave the Lions in their wake. After breaking a tackle, skipper Umaga flicks a lovely pass out to Sivivatu and there's simply no stopping him despite the best efforts of Wilkinson and Lewsey.

46 min: Ryan Jones gathers the kick downfield and goes into contact. Umaga knocks on deliberately so it's a Lions penalty but Peel taps-and-goes and knocks on to present the All Blacks with the put-in at the scrum.

45 min: Byrne finds his man at the back of the line-out and the Lions have the chance to get a bit of possession. New Zealand are ferocious in defence and force them back 20m so Wilkinson has to kick downfield. MacDonald goes back to gather and kicks downfield but he fails to find touch.

45 min: McCaw struggles to gather the restart but yet again the referee adjudges he has knocked it back not forward. The ABs work the ball to Carter and he finds a good touch.

44 min: PENALTY - CARTER. Carter slots the penalty between the posts.

43 min: Jack gathers the restart but O'Connell tugs him down and it's another kickable penalty for the All Blacks. Thomas appears to have started the second half at full-back with Robinson now on the wing.

42 min: It's another one against the throw for New Zealand on the Lions line-outs as again Byrne's throw goes awry. The ABs work it out to the right before coming back to the left when the Lions keep them at bay. Carter then arrows a kick into the Lions 22 but Lewsey gathers and recycles to Peel, who finds a hurried - but effective - touch down the right.

41 min: Corry loses the ball after initially appearing to have gathered it but So'oialo knocks on. The penalty comes to the Lions from the subsequent scrum and Wilkinson finds touch.

40 min: New Zealand get the action back under way.

HT: New Zealand 11 Lions 0.

40 min: The half ends with a knock-on from Jenkins as he attempts to halt a New Zealand attack. The Lions trudge off trailing having simply failed to perform. They have been disastrous at the line-out, presenting the All Blacks with the only try of the half there, have lost O'Driscoll and Hill to injury and have been outclassed in all areas thus far. Indeed perhaps the only saving grace is that they are 'only' 11-0 down at the break.

39 min: The All Blacks are getting all the basics right and again it's a Lions mistake that ends another phase of play as Lewsey knocks forward with Collins putting him under huge pressure.

39 min: A kicking battle develops from the restart with Greenwood and MacDonald trading efforts before Stephen Jones finds touch.

38 min: Wilkinson's kick slides away to the left.

37 min: Stephen Jones hoists a huge kick from the scrum which MacDonald appears to knock on. He gathers at the second attempt - with the referee signalling it has gone backwards - but the All Blacks transgress at the ruck with Williams blatantly taking out Peel. Wilkinson is going for the posts.

36 min: Wilkinson's kick is knocked on as Corry puts in a huge hit on So'oialo. It'll be a Lions put-in at the scrum.

35 min: Byrne looks to Kay at the line-out but again Jack gets the hand in to scramble it back on the All Blacks side. They work it to Carter and the All Blacks get a lucky ricochet that allows Carter to kick down the left. Sivivatu chases it down with Gareth Thomas and looks to have just edged in front but the ball evades him with an unlucky bounce for the All Blacks. Play will restart with a 22 drop-out.

34 min: Stephen Jones finds touch down the left. The Lions must get the basics right if they are to even get a foothold in this one.

33 min: Jack remains dominant at the line-out, allowing Carter to hoist a huge kick. Robinson gathers and makes a good 10m with his initial burst from inside his own 22. The penalty comes at the first ruck as Mealamu is penalised for putting hands in illegally.

32 min: The Lions get the shove on but Marshall grubs a kick into touch down the left. The Lions manage to scramble the ball back on their side somehow despite it initally looking to have gone astray but Wilkinson's kick is sliced again.

31 min: Mealamu finds his man at the line-out but it's scrappy ball. Corry tries to disrupt Marshall but can only knock on so it's a New Zealand put-in at the scrum.

30 min: The AB work a simple line-out move before Jerry Collins grubs a kick in but Ryan Jones - surely the Lions' man of the match so far despite coming off the bench - is there first and recycles well to namesake Stephen, who finds a great touch.

29 min: Byrne finally finds his man at the line-out and the Lions get the chance to rumble onwards. The maul quickly goes down, though, and the Lions have to look to their backs. Wilkinson's pass to Lewsey is poor and Umaga hits him hard, allowing New Zealand to break. MacDonald kicks ahead and chases it down, forcing Robinson over the touchline.

28 min: Jack taps the ball down to McCaw but he can only divert it into Byrne's hands. He chips down the line and forces Howlett right back to the brink of his own tryline. It appears Howlett is holding on a little too long but the referee lets it go and Carter finds touch. It's a line-out 5m out for the Lions and a big chance.

27 min: Another line-out goes against the throw but it's a let-off for the Lions as New Zealand have one too many in the line. Wilkinson takes the tap and hoists a huge kick which is superbly gathered by McCaw. The penalty goes to New Zealand as Back puts hands in illegally. Carter finds touch down the right.

26 min: The restart is worked into Carter's hands and he pumps downfield. Robinson gathers and chips ahead but McCaw shows good hands. The ball is worked out wide and a kicking battle develops but as so often thus far the All Blacks are convincing winners as MacDonald finds touch down the right. Worrying times for the Lions.

25 min: Carter misses the penalty.

24 min: TRY - WILLIAMS. Double disaster for the Lions. Stephen Jones' awful kick allows the All Blacks to batter into the Lions 22 until Ryan Jones forces his man over the touchline for a Lions line-out. Byrne can only find Williams in the middle of the line and he bursts through to score from close range. The Lions have shot themselves in the foot twice in the space of a minute.

23 min: It appears Hill doesn't have a shoulder problem as he's waiting off the field for a stretcher. Byrne goes to O'Connell in the line-out and the Irishman is pulled down by Jack. The New Zealand is ticked off by the referee and Stephen Jones opts for a ridiculous cross-kick with Josh Lewsey the only man there surrounded by four All Blacks.

22 min: Byrne again goes to Ryan Jones over the top of the line-out. He does well to recycle allowing Stephen Jones to pump downfield. MacDonald gathers in his own 22 and finds a lovely touch down the right, taking play back into the Lions half. Definitely advantage All Blacks in that exchange. O'Connell is back out of the bin and the Lions have their full complement.

21 min: Wilkinson pumps the ball into touch down the right, taking play to near halfway.

20 min: Mealamu is again faultless at the line-out and New Zealand are able to work it quickly to Sivivatu down the left as they look to prosper with the Lions still a man down. Sivivatu is wrapped up by three or four Lions, though, and holds on in the tackle. Penalty to the Lions and a chance to clear their lines and settle their nerves.

19 min: New Zealand get the shove on from the line-out before moving if through their backs. Tana Umaga tries a grubber kick but Robinson goes down on it and scrabbles it back on the Lions' side. Peel flicks the ball back to Greenwood and he is wrapped up five metres from his own line. Fortunately he manages to recycle it despite a lack of support and Peel finds touch down the left.

18 min: Ryan Jones is on for the Lions with Hill making way and he takes the first line-out throw over the top. The ball is flicked back to Stephen Jones and he finds a good touch down the right. Hill looks to have a shoulder problem after taking down Ali Williams.

18 min: The video referee awards a line-out to the Lions after judging that Sivivatu had been forced over the touchline by Robinson's desperate slide.

17 min: Jack is the target at the line-out and again there's on problems for the ABs. Yet again Carter is the man they look to for their inspiration in the backline but Greenwood puts in a huge hit to force him backwards. New Zealand recycle and work an overlap down the left. Sivivatu dives for the line hoping to slide over but Robinson slides in a bid to force him over the touchline. It's gone to the video referee but it's clearly no try - he's a yard short.

16 min: Hill has to go from the scrum as the hosts try to turn it. He makes all of a yard before he is all wrapped up by the New Zealanders. They manage to work it to Wilkinson but his kick is sliced badly and fails to leave the Lions 22. Pressure on.

15 min: New Zealand are having no problems at their line-out - unlike the Lions - and it's quickly into playmaker Carter's hands. He steps outside Wilkinson and tries to flick inside to Marshall but the Leeds-bound scrum-half knocks on with the try-line gaping in front of him.

14 min: Jack gathers the restart under pressure from Jenkins. The ball is worked to Carter but it's a poor pass and he can't find touch. Robinson gathers but his kick is woeful and goes out on the full. Line-out to the ABs 15m inside the Lions half.

13 min: PENALTY - CARTER. It's a routine penalty for Carter.

12 min: The Lions are driven back yet again from their own line-out and Carter opts to chip the ball forwards. Robinson gets back but there are two men on him immediately. There's a penalty coming but the ABs want full advantage as they get to within two metres of the line. Paul O'Connell blatantly comes in from an offside position to kill the ball and he is straight in the bin. Penalty to All Blacks in front of the posts and the Lions are rocking.

11 min: Mealamu finds his man at the line-out and the All Blacks work it to Carter. He arrows a kick to the brink of the Lions 22 which Robinson wisely lets go.

10 min: Wilkinson has emerged unscathed from that huge hit on Howlett and he restarts play. New Zealand opt for a couple of early kicks in an attempt to get territorial advantage but it is Wilkinson who finds touch. It'll be an AB line-out just inside their own half.

9 min: PENALTY - CARTER. The penalty was for offside when the All Blacks turned it over, and Carter slots it between the posts to put the hosts in front.

8 min: New Zealand turn defence into attack in almost the blink of an eye as they break down the left. Carter and Aaron Mauger combine with a clever kick from the former setting the latter free to advance. Peel gets a hand in as he tries to pass it inside and then tracks back well to be first to the ball. New Zealand turn it over, though, and have numbers out to the right. It looks like a certain try when Wilkinson puts in a huge hit on Doug Howlett. The attack falters and the referee calls it back for a penalty early in the attack for New Zealand. That was a try-saving tackle from Wilkinson, though.

7 min: The restart goes out on the full and it's a Lions scrum on the New Zealand 22. Corry picks up and goes from the base of the scrum but he's isolated from his fellow forwards when Richie McCaw gets hold of him. Corry knocks on in contact and it's a New Zealand put-in.

6 min: The All Blacks struggle again at the scrum and the Lions get the penalty this time. There's a quick tap-and-go yet again with Peel bursting away in trademark fashion. The ball is worked back to Wilkinson and he chips ahead. Great stuff from the Lions with New Zealand pinned back. They work the ball to Marshall but his kick is charged down by Corry. MacDonald touches down in goal with Byrne charging towards him.

5 min: Byrne overthrows at the line and Rodney So'oialo gathers but the AB attack falters and the Lions are awarded the put-in at the scrum as a pile-up ensues.

4 min: Robinson jinks inside and out of a couple of tackles and the ball is recycled to Back. He opts for a clever little kick and MacDonald has to pump it out for a Lions line-out.

3 min: Free-kick to Lions as play restarts with the All Blacks pinged at the scrum. Corry taps and goes and the Lions work the ball to Jones who pumps straight downfield. Leon MacDonald picks up inside his own 22 but his kick is straight down Robinson's throat.

2 min: O'Driscoll has been loaded onto the stretcher and leaves the field after a heavy fall while working the fringes at a ruck. Greenwood is on and the Lions coaches look dismayed.

2 min: This looks terminal for O'Driscoll. The stretcher is on and Will Greenwood is ready to come on.

2 min: Dan Carter hoists a cross-kick which Sivivatu chases down. He and Jason Robinson are converging on it - with the Lions man the favourite - when it strikes the flag on the tryline. Early dominance for the All Blacks...and bad news for the Lions with O'Driscoll writhing in pain.

1 min: Chris Jack gathers Wilkinson's kick and the first penalty goes the way of the All Blacks with Jenkins in from the side. Marshall taps and goes quickly and already the Lions are pressed back inside their own half. An early statement of intent from the All Blacks.

0 min: After the traditional Haka, responded to by O'Driscoll picking a piece of grass from the pitch to signify the acceptance of the challenge, the Lions get the game under way with Wilkinson hoisting the first kick of this much-awaited Test series into the night sky.

Pre-match: The Lions are greeted by some typical British weather as they embark on their three-Test series. Winter sunshine which has engulfed Christchurch all week has been replaced by driving rain and a biting wind. England World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson makes his first full-blown Test match appearance for 19 months and finds himself in the unfamiliar position of inside centre. Lions chief Sir Clive Woodward has no hesitation in fielding him in midfield alongside captain Brian O'Driscoll, with Stephen Jones and his Welsh Grand Slam colleague Dwayne Peel featuring as half-backs. Up front the Lions parade an all-English back-row of Richard Hill, Neil Back and Martin Corry. Ireland's Shane Byrne wins the vote as hooker above Steve Thompson, and there is a huge onus on props Gethin Jenkins and Julian White to establish scrummaging authority in a crucial set-piece area where the Lions needed domination. The All Blacks, beaten on just one previous occasion by the Lions in Christchurch, include exciting new wing prospect Sitiveni Sivivatu, with coach Graham Henry opting to field six Canterbury players on home soil, including half-backs Dan Carter and Justin Marshall. It is veteran Marshall's last Test match appearance at the Jade Stadium before joining Premiership club Leeds later this summer. French referee Joel Jutge referees.
