It is a sign of how far Williams has progressed that 18 months after he appeared to have missed the boat in terms of World Cup selection, he is a genuine contender for a Lions starting berth.
The Ospreys flyer made his debut as a 23-year-old yet despite averaging a try a game in the early part of his international career he was cast into the international wilderness between 2001 and 2003.
Perhaps realising the error of his ways Steve Hansen called him up into the World Cup squad of 2003 at the 11th hour and the coach was rewarded with tries against eventual winners England and the might of New Zealand.
Williams has gone from strength to strength since and was one of the key performers in Wales' Six Nations triumph earlier this season, scoring three tries in his five appearances.
He has been likened to Gerald Davies and comes out of a familiar mould for Welsh wingers, with lightning pace and an incredible sidestep, but also has a willingness to go searching for work infield.
Defensively Williams' frame makes him an easy target for opponents but his ability going forward allied to the fact he can turn his hand to playing at scrum-half more than outweighs any perceived weakness in that area. |
