PROFILE

Perhaps the most recognisable of the Lions squad to non-rugby fans, Henson's profile has rocketed since his heroics against England in the Six Nations and the start of his relationship with Charlotte Church, Wales' 'Posh' to his 'Becks'.

Henson himself admits that going out on a rugby field with a tan as deep as his, shaved legs and silver boots means he must perform or the brickbats will come flying his way all too easily.

Yet, to the disappointment of certain sections of the English media, that is exactly what the Ospreys man did at least in the early part of the recent Six Nations as his towering penalty gave Wales the 11-9 victory over Andy Robinson's men that set them on the way to their Grand Slam.

That was certainly the peak of his tournament yet even when he is not in the greatest of form it is simply impossible to ignore his presence in the backline.

A debutant at the age of 19 in the coveted Wales No 10 shirt against Japan, Henson was named IRB Young Player of the Year in 2001 to mark his arrival at the top table.

Yet the introduction of Iestyn Harris to the Wales squad affected Henson more than most and when he failed to acquit himself with the desired effect at either wing or full-back, he was left sidelined.

Mike Ruddock knew the talent the youngster possessed, though, and he had no hesitation in throwing him back into the fray on taking charge of Wales after Steve Hansen's departure.

The reward was immediate as Henson kicked a record 14 conversions from 14 attempts in the mauling of Japan and the 23-year-old has been the first choice - at inside centre - ever since.

Tougher than he looks, he will give the Lions extra options if picked at 12 where his understanding with Stephen Jones and excellent tactical kicking will come into play.
