As a slightly built centre, Smith is something of a throwback to the old days.
Eschewing the modern hit-it-up style, Smith demonstrates an ability to exploit the gap, an elusive burst of speed and a canny passing game.
With only one appearance off the Hurricanes bench in 2004, Smith has commanded much more game time this season.
A cerebral player on the field, Smith graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Law with Honours, but has put any legal career on hold to concentrate on his bright rugby future. Smith has represented no other first-class national team but was a member of New Zealand Universities in 2002 and 2003.
His uncle Alan Smith played three Tests for the All Blacks between 1967/70. |
