An outstanding all-rounder, Mauger is comfortable playing first and second five-eighths and has a superb kicking game.

He made his All Blacks debut in 2001 and has established himself as not only a leading player but also a leader. Mauger is a former New Zealand Colts captain and was All Blacks vice captain in 2002.

He had a superb season for Canterbury in 2004 and was named captain of the All Blacks for their match against the Barbarians in November last year.

A better goal kicker than he probably gives himself credit for, Mauger scored 18 points in last year's win over Fiji at Wellington.

He captained New Zealand Under-21 to success in the International Under-21 tournaments in 2000 and 2001, although he missed the 2001 final due to injury.
