NEW ZEALAND v LIONS MIN-BY-MIN
Picture
11 min: Smith dives over for his try.

By Reece Killworth

80 min: CONVERSION - McALISTER. McAlister slots over the conversion with the last kick of the game. It's been a tour of many disappointments for the Lions yet as the post-mortem begins it would be churlish not to pay tribute to the All Blacks, who have impressed today despite being without several of their big hitters.

80 min: TRY - GEAR. The Lions win line-out ball and look for some late consolation but the ball goes astray as Gear intercepts in midfield. He chips ahead, knocks the ball on with his feet and dives on the ball over the line gleefully. Marvellous stuff.

79 min: McAlister pumps the ball into touch down the left.

79 min: The Lions go for the rolling maul but are held up. The ball is flicked out towards the right but Lewsey clings on in the tackle and it's a penalty to the All Blacks.

78 min: The Lions upset the AB line-out and win a penalty. Stephen Jones pumps into touch down the left. What odds the catch and drive from the Lions here?

77 min: Good line-out ball for the Lions which is worked out to Horgan on the left. He tries to offload but has already been forced over the line. James Ryan is on for Jack in the AB second row.

76 min: The Lions fling it expansively to the right but Lewsey's flick to Cueto falls behind the Sale man and Horgan has to get back to retain possession. The penalty comes with Collins lying on the wrong side and Stephen Jones pumps into touch down the right.

75 min: The ABs work it to the right but it goes forward from Marshall to Smith. Martyn Williams is finally into the fray for the Lions with Moody making way.

74 min: The ball is worked into O'Gara's hands and he finds a good touch down the right. The Lions are pinged at the line-out, though, and the ABs give them no let-up by running the free-kick.

73 min: There's a knock-on at the line-out as the ABs try to clean up what was initially scrappy ball.

72 min: McAlister dabs the kick into touch down the left.

71 min: A big advantage for the ABs there as play is called back for offside over on the left of the field when they had almost scored on the right.

70 min: The AB line-out functions as it should do and good ball retention helps them take play from halfway deep into the Lions' 22. McAlister dabs a kick in which Horgan does superbly to gather before clambering back to his feet and grounding behind his own line.

69 min: Good line-out ball for the Lions and Jones pumps it into touch down the left, taking play back towards halfway. Gordon Bulloch is on for Byrne meaning the Scots finally have a Test representative on this tour. Had he not got on - or had Thompson not fallen foul of a virus in the build-up to the game - it would have been the first time since 1950 that a country hadn't been represented in Test rugby.

68 min: The All Blacks work a clever move from the line-out which buys McAlister plenty of time to find touch with a booming kick down the right. He's taken play from inside his own 22 to tbe brink of the Lions' 22.

67 min: Stephen Jones' restart is scrabbled back well on the Lions' side. It's worked to Horgan and he pins back the All Blacks with a clever kick down the left. Martin Corry is on for Ryan Jones.

66 min: Good line-out ball for the ABs and they look to make some ground with the rolling maul. It's an impressive sight as they take play from outside the Lions' 22 to the five metre line before looking at other options. McAlister dinks a kick over the top but Murphy reads it well and touches down in goal.

66 min: Ronan O'Gara is on for Murphy. Stephen Jones has moved to inside centre, Horgan is now on the wing and Lewsey has slotted in at full-back.

65 min: Good ball retention from the All Blacks before Ryan Jones is penalised on halfway for failing to roll away from the tackle. McAlister pumps the ball into touch down the right.

64 min: Collins is back on for the ABs after his spell in the sin bin.

63 min: Stephen Jones finds touch down the left and the Lions set off on another gallant attack as they work it right and left trying to find a gap in the ABs defence. They get it into the ABs 22 but Johnstone turns it over after a great tackle from Sivivatu.

62 min: It's a penalty to the ABs as O'Callaghan pulls back Gear as he tries to gather the ball. Play continues desite the whistle and So'oialo puts in a late hit on Murphy. That's a reversal of the penalty and So'oialo is given a ticking-off by the referee.

61 min: The scrum becomes a free-kick as the Lions are pinged in the front row. Marshall tries to work it through the backs but the Lions turn it over and Murphy finds a great touch on halfway with a booming kick down the left.

61 min: Awful restart play from the Lions as Sivivatu is able to gather it out on the left wing after a breakdown in communication. He is finally dragged down but it'll be an AB put-in at the scrum well inside the Lions' 22.

60 min: CONVERSION - STEPHEN JONES. Stephen Jones slots over the conversion as Moody receives treatment for what appears to be an eye injury.

59 min: TRY - MOODY. Byrne finds his man and again the Lions go for the rolling maul. Finally they get their reward as the ball is grounded by Moody over the line. The referee is perfectly positioned and doesn't need to go to the video referee to award it.

58 min: Ryan Jones goes from the base of the scrum to get to within a couple of metres. Williams comes blatantly through the ruck too early and kills the ball at Dawson's feet. Play breaks down and the referee awards the penalty. Williams is ticked off by the referee and Stephen Jones finds touch.

58 min: It's a scrum five as Marshall has held Lewsey up over the line.

57 min: Easterby is the man found at the line-out and the Lions rumble for the line. They go over the line in a huge pile of Lions and All Blacks with Lewsey seeming to be the man in possession. The referee sensibly goes to the television official.

56 min: Stephen Jones finds touch down the left and Byrne hits his man at the line-out. It's advantage Lions as the ABs take it down illegally and the penalty comes as play breaks down. Stephen Jones again knocks it into touch as the Lions crank it up.

55 min: Stephen Jones finds touch down the left and the penalty comes from the line-out as the ABs transgress. The Lions will be hoping to come off better from this sin-binning than they did when Umaga was yellow carded in the first half.

54 min: It's much too ponderous for the Lions and Collins turns it over. Jack of all people sees the gap over the top and chips a kick there. Sivivatu outpaces Lewsey and powers over the line but touch judge Stuart Dickinson is on and the try is disallowed. That was a marvellous try and from a neutral point of view it's a shame that it's been disallowed. Collins has been sent to the bin for a late shoulder charge on Stephen Jones in back play.

53 min: Poor handling from Stephen Jones this time but New Zealand cough it up after using up the advantage. A scrappy period of play this, but you always feel the ABs are more dangerous in broken play than the Lions.

52 min: McAlister tries an ambitious chip kick from inside his own 22. It's straight at Lewsey but the England man knocks it on. The ball is worked out to the left but Cueto again scrags Sivivatu, this time with help from Murphy, and earns the Lions a line-out.

51 min: Lions captain Thomas departs, with Shane Horgan replacing him. O'Connell takes over the captaincy but can't take the ball on the peel at the line-out, knocking it on.

50 min: A great show of character from the Lions as they get the shove on up front after winning good clean line-out ball. They take play into the ABs 22 and Holah is pinged for pulling down the maul. Stephen Jones kicks into touch down the left.

49 min: Matt Dawson and Graham Rowntree are on for the Lions with Peel and Jenkins off.

49 min: CONVERSION - McALISTER. Routine conversion from in front.

48 min: TRY - UMAGA. Another try for the skipper as he crashes over with second phase ball after the Lions' defenders were sucked in up front from the free-kick.

47 min: The Lions are pinged at the scrum. Free-kick to the ABs five metres out.

47 min: Jack climbs highest at the line-out but can only knock it forward. Justin Marshall is on for the ABs, with Kelleher leaving the fray.

47 min: New Zealand win scrum ball against the head as the ball pops out to Kelleher. The ball is worked out quickly towards the left and Sivivatu goes for the line. Cueto and Moody combine to scrag him and carry him over the touchline. A real chance for the ABs there.

46 min: Scrum ball is worked to McAlister and he goes for a crossfield kick which Muliaina gathers. The Lions have numbers there and draw a mistake in the second phase as McAlister drops a poor pass from Kelleher.

46 min: Campbell Johnstone replaces Tony Woodcock in the AB front row.

45 min: Two in a row for O'Connell as he beats Jack to the punch at the line-out. The ball is worked out through the Lions' midfield but yet again it's rather ponderous and a knock on comes as Cueto's handling lets him down on the floor. Smith opts to kick ahead trying to find Sivivatu but it goes out on the full. Play comes back for the knock on.

44 min: O'Connell wins the line-out ball against the throw for the Lions. It's flicked back to Stephen Jones quickly by Peel and he finds a good touch down the left.

43 min: Good line-out ball for the All Blacks again and it's worked to Jerry Collins who makes good yardage through the middle. It's flicked back onto the inside to McAlister and he puts the Lions under huge pressure with a great kick. Murphy returns the kick but McAlister's second kick is even better, forcing Murphy to slice into touch. AB line-out in the Lions' 22.

42 min: The Lions recycle well through a couple of phases but then it's slow coming on and Peel opts to kick ahead over the ruck. He finds a good touch on the AB 22.

41 min: Holah is into the action as he takes Mealamu's line-out throw but it's not been thrown in straight so it's a Lions scrum on halfway.

40 min: Ryan Jones gathers the restart from McAlister bravely. It's worked to Stephen Jones and he finds a great touch down the right, taking play up to halfway.

40 min: The All Blacks have replaced Lauaki with Marty Holah.

HT: New Zealand 24 Lions 12.

40 min: Moody puts in a crunching hit on Lauaki from the restart. The ball ricochets back on the ABs side and McAlister finds touch. Byrne finds his man at the line-out and the Lions work it out to Lewsey on the left. He tries to jink inside but is dragged over the line in the last act of the half.

39 min: CONVERSION - McALISTER. McAlister slots over an easy conversion.

38 min: TRY - UMAGA. With a solid scrum, the All Blacks are able to get quick ball. McAlister makes a burst by straightening his line and drags three defenders in. He offloads at just the right time and Umaga crosses despite the best efforts of Ryan Jones.

37 min: The scrum is reset twice as it collapses.

36 min: Scrappy line-out ball for the ABs but Kelleher tidies it up as he attempts to snipe around the fringes. McAlister opts for a Carlos Spencer-esque kick off the outside of his boot and although Lewsey appears to have gathered it at first glance, he has actually knocked on.

35 min: McAlister finds touch down the right, taking play to the brink of the Lions' 22.

34 min: Jack takes the line-out ball and New Zealand trundle into the Lions' half before Mealamu goes off the back. The Lions turn it over and Murphy kicks ahead but the All Blacks get the verdict as Thomas goes through the ruck before the ball is out.

33 min: Stephen Jones' kick hits the outside of the right-hand post. Smith gathers and carries it clear, allowing Kelleher to hoist the ball into touch down the left. That's no advantage for the ABs, so referee Kaplan awards the penalty as Thomas had come in from the side.

32 min: The Lions cut the gap too quickly at the line-out to give New Zealand a free-kick. Sione Lauaki taps and goes into contact before a kicking battle develops. The Lions again come off the better by getting the pressure on up front and there's an All Black offside. The advantage comes to nothing and it's a penalty to the Lions.

31 min: Byrne finds Ryan Jones in the line-out and the Lions look to rumble onwards. Again there's one too many New Zealanders at the line so it's a free-kick to the Lions. Peel taps and goes and flicks it to Greenwood, who dabs a kick into touch down the right.

30 min: Kelleher opts for the kick from the scrum and finds a good touch down the right, taking play to 10m inside the Lions' half.

29 min: Perhaps Gear should have taken it quickly - Mealamu fails to get it in straight and it's a Lions scrum on the AB 22. Ryan Jones picks up and goes from the base before the Lions look to their backs. Lewsey powers in off his wing to take play on a couple of metres but it's hard going and eventually Stephen Jones knocks on in the tackle.

29 min: Stephen Jones opts to kick from the scrum and finds a good touch down the left on the All Blacks' 22. Gear considers taking it quickly but thinks again.

28 min: Peel taps and goes quickly from the line-out and looks out to the right. Greenwood tries to find Thomas with an ambitious pass which Umaga gets a hand to. He just can't gather it in, though, so play will restart with a Lions scrum.

27 min: The All Blacks' front row transgress at the scrum and Stephen Jones finds a good touch down the right. Byrne finds his man at the line-out as the rain lashes down at Eden Park. The play breaks down but it's a Lions free-kick as the ABs had too many at the line-out.

26 min: Kelleher opts for the quick tap and go and Smith takes play into the Lions 22. It's recycled well and Sivivatu makes another five metres. The ABs have options left and right as the ruck forms around 10 metres out from the Lions line but Kelleher knocks on.

25 min: Williams gathers the line-out ball and Kelleher goes for the no-risk option by pumping the ball into touch down the left, taking play to around halfway. Byrne's line-out throw goes astray as Jack steals. McAlister kicks ahead but Murphy gathers and brings play back to halfway with a powerful jinking run. The ball is recycled well a couple of times but then the penalty comes to the ABs with a Lions hand going in illegally on the floor.

24 min: The restart is worked into Peel's hands and he finds touch with a marvellous touch down the right. It's a New Zealand line-out deep in their own 22. It's been great half-back play from the Lions' Wales pair thus far.

23 min: PENALTY - STEPHEN JONES. Stephen Jones keeps the Lions within striking distance.

22 min: The restart is taken bravely by Mealamu before a kicking battle develops. The Lions come out of it the better as Kelleher is pinged for holding on in the tackle. Great chasing from Lewsey there, who hunted down his own dabbed kick over the top to force the penalty.

21 min: PENALTY - McALISTER. The Lions' stupidity is punished as McAlister slots it over.

20 min: A rare handling error from Kelleher at the base of a ruck sees the Lions get the put-in. The penalty goes to the ABs, though, as Julian White drops his bind. Ryan Jones disputes the decision and it's marched forward 10 metres into kicking range. Brainless play.

19 min: The Lions try to work a clever move in midfield but it looks far too ponderous and Greenwood passes forward to Thomas. The ABs had it covered in any case with two tacklers primed to crunch into Thomas. Scrum to the ABs just inside their own half. Umaga is back.

18 min: The restart is worked into Stephen Jones' hands and he finds touch with a booming kick downfield. Sivivatu takes it early but a crossfield kick from Muliaina skips out of play with Smith hunting it down. Byrne finds his man from the line-out and there's a knock-on in the tackle from Sivivatu as he powers into Thomas. Scrum to the Lions.

18 min: PENALTY - STEPHEN JONES. As expected, Stephen Jones slots it over.

17 min: Peel is back to his feet and quickly involved from the restart. Indeed, he draws a penalty as the ABs advance from the back of a ruck too quickly and Stephen Jones should slot it over.

16 min: It's easy to forget Umaga is still in the sin bin. The ABs have scored 14 points since losing their captain!

15 min: CONVERSION - McALISTER. McAlister slots over the conversion as Peel is treated after So'oialo caught him. Clearly accidently but it's hurt Peel.

14 min: TRY - WILLIAMS. The Lions disrupt the ABs line-out yet still the ball comes back on the New Zealand side. The ball is quickly worked out to the left where Sivivatu makes good ground. It's recycled and work back to McAlister. He dabs a kick in which Peel can't deal with due to an unfortunate bounce and the presence of So'oialo. Williams is first to react and touches down.

13 min: A nerve-settler for McAlister as he pumps the ball into touch down the right. The line-out is then worked into his hands again and he dabs a kick ahead that forces Peel to slide in to gather and take over the touchline.

12 min: The restart is worked into McAlister's hands but he fumbles under pressure from Peel. It's a let-off for the New Zealand fly-half, though, as Peel and two other Lions were offside.

12 min: CONVERSION - McALISTER. McAlister slots over the conversion to put the ABs in front.

11 min: TRY - SMITH. Free-kick to New Zealand from the scrum as the Lions' front row transgresses. Kelleher taps and goes quickly, feeding So'oialo. He makes good ground and the ball is quickly recycled. It's flicked to Smith and he comes inside Cueto - who was guarding Sivivatu - and crashes through Murphy's tackle to score. The ABs may be down to 14 but that looked so easy.

10 min: The restart is knocked on twice by the Lions. The ball is worked out to the right by the ABs but it's knocked on by Smith so play is called back for the first Lions knock on.

9 min: PENALTY - STEPHEN JONES. Umaga's killing of the ball is punished as Stephen Jones knocks over the penalty from in front.

8 min: Sitiveni Sivivatu gets a lecture from the referee for a late tackle in backplay but the big decision comes seconds later as Tana Umaga is sent to the bin for killing the ball just metres away from the All Blacks tryline. It's been a rare occurence on this tour, but the ABs are rocking.

7 min: Byrne again finds his man - this time Paul O'Connell - at the line-out and the Lions spin it wide. Lewsey makes a great burst into the AB 22 down the left flank and it's recycled and flicked back towards the right. There are three or four men over but Donnacha O'Callaghan opts to go for the line rather than pass. The penalty comes to the Lions but it really should have been a pass for a certain try. O'Callaghan went for glory there and came up short.

6 min: The ball is slowed down well by the ABs and Dwayne Peel has to kick over the top. Mils Muliaina gathers in his own 22 and pumps into touch down the left. Lions line-out on halfway.

5 min: Keven Mealamu is successful with his first line-out throw by finding Chris Jack. The ABs retain the ball well until McAlister opts to chip a kick ahead. Gareth Thomas leaps and brings it down before taking contract. It's recycled on the Lions' side and a kicking battle develops with Gethin Jenkins, Rico Gear and Murphy all kicking. It is the Lions who eventually get ball in hand and make good progress over halfway.

4 min: McAlister's restart is well gathered by Stephen Jones in his own 22. He takes the contact and the ball is worked to Cueto. His left-footed kick finds touch just short of halfway.

3 min: PENALTY - STEPHEN JONES. Jones slots over an early penalty to lift the Lions.

2 min: Byrne finds Simon Easterby to a huge cheer from the Lions fans and the men in red and white get the rumble on up front. Play reaches the All Blacks 22 and there is a penalty coming so Stephen Jones goes for the drop goal. It drifts just wide but the penalty is then awarded for Greg Somerville having strayed offside at the ruck.

2 min: McAlister gets his first chance to kick and finds touch well down the right after scrum ball is worked into his hands quickly by Byron Kelleher. Early pressure on Byrne.

1 min: Great restart chasing from Lewis Moody ensures the ball comes back on the Lions side but the first put-in at the scrum will go to the All Blacks as there's a knock-on up front. A decent enough start for the Lions, though, with play deep inside the New Zealand 22.

0 min: Stephen Jones gets the game under way for the lines on Jonathan Kaplan's first whistle.

Pre-match: The Lions have suffered a late blow as they target a consolation prize at Eden Park in the final Test against New Zealand. Already 2-0 down and the series gone following defeats in Christchurch and Wellington, head coach Sir Clive Woodward has seen his selection plans disrupted as hooker Steve Thompson has withdrawn through illness. England forward Thompson is suffering from a virus, so Ireland's Shane Byrne - whose lineout throwing proved so wayward during the first Test - deputises. Byrne's promotion off the bench means Lions midweek captain Gordon Bulloch features among the replacements as Woodward's men look to stave off a first Test series whitewash in any country since 1983. Injuries force Woodward's hand behind the scrum, where fly-half Jonny Wilkinson and centre Gavin Henson are both sidelined through neck/shoulder 'stinger' problems, which mean starts for Stephen Jones and Will Greenwood. Woodward has dropped wings Jason Robinson and Shane Williams after a 48-18 drubbing in Wellington seven days ago, which means Lions Test debuts for prolific England try-scorer Mark Cueto and Irish full-back Geordan Murphy, with Josh Lewsey switching to wing duties. New Zealand are also severely affected by fitness setbacks, as fly-half Dan Carter, centre Aaron Mauger and flanker Richie McCaw have all withdrawn. It forces All Blacks coach Graham Henry into a considerable reshuffle, with rookie Luke McAlister taking over from Carter, Conrad Smith starting instead of Mauger and Rodney So'oialo featuring at openside flanker with Sione Lauaki wearing the number eight jersey. Smith's midfield appearance means that All Blacks captain Tana Umaga lines up at inside centre, but despite such upheaval, New Zealand go into battle as firm favourites to record a 3-0 series triumph.
