Result: Auckland 13 Lions 17.
80 min: The hooter sounds as the Lions have the ball in the scrum. It's worked to Dawson and he brings an end to the game by pumping into touch. The Lions' midweek side have emerged with their 100% record in tact from what has been a tough encounter.
79 min: The ball is worked right and left as Auckland probe for an opening but the attack comes to nothing as Ward knocks on down the short side. Scrum to the Lions and they should surely close this game out now.
78 min: Cueto does well to gather a kick over the top and take it into contact. It's eventually knocked forward up front and it's an Auckland put-in on halfway.
78 min: Auckland replace Atiga with Isaia Toe'ava while John Fonokalafi comes on for the misfiring Telefoni.
77 min: PENALTY - O'GARA. O'Gara pushes the Lions out to four points in the lead.
76 min: Good line-out ball for the Lions and the ball is slowed up illegally by Auckland with three men on the wrong side including recent replacement Kurtis Haiu.
75 min: Telefoni finds his man despite being under the most pressure he has been on all night. Devine opts to kick ahead but only finds Murphy. He opts for a snap drop-goal which doesn't even reach the tryline. Auckland work the ball to Lavea but his kick fails to find touch. O'Gara also fails to find touch but he gives Lavea no angle for his clearance kick and it's sliced into touch.
74 min: Quick line-out ball for the Lions which Corry takes into contract on halfway. Owen then takes the second phase before O'Gara drives the ball into the corner. Great territorial kicking from the Irishman there to pin back Auckland.
73 min: O'Gara finds a good touch down the left.
72 min: O'Gara dabs a kick into touch down the right after a kicking battle from the restart. Telefoni finds his man at the line-out and Auckland get a good shove on. The ball is worked from right to left where Rokocoko makes good ground. Devine then chooses to kick but Hickie gathers well and bravely puts his body on the line. Auckland dive off their feet and it's a Lions penalty.
71 min: Gavin Williams is on for Auckland. Nacewa has made way.
71 min: Ward's kick just fades away to the right.
70 min: Telefoni finds his man at the line-out and Dawson is then penalised for slowing the ball down illegally. It's a kickable penalty and unsurprisingly Ward is going for the posts.
69 min: Auckland work the ball right and left probing the Lions' defence and a fly-kick from Ward forces Cueto back to dab it out for an Auckland line-out. The pressure is on.
68 min: Sloppy line-out ball for Auckland and Stevens manages to get a hand in to scrabble it back on the Lions' side. It's worked out towards the left flank but D'Arcy can't gather it in midfield and it'll be an Auckland put-in at the scrum.
67 min: Lavea misses his touch with a poor kick and Cueto punishes him by booming another one into touch down the Lions' right.
66 min: Auckland are turning up the pressure on the Lions now and Horgan is penalised for diving off his feet at the ruck. He then talks back to the referee and it's moved 10m forward. The Lions are rocking under the pressure and must keep their discipline.
65 min: Ward gathers and kicks ahead himself but Dawson takes it well and makes a nice break back towards the Auckland 22. The ball is retained up front by the Lions and O'Gara hoists a huge kick which Ward does well to gather and mark under pressure from Williams.
64 min: Auckland are throwing everything at the Lions as they break from the restart but Atiga and Ward have a breakdown in communication and it's spilt forward. The Lions work the scrum possession to O'Gara and he kicks well to force Ward back.
64 min: Auckland bring Chris Heard on for Taumoepeau.
63 min: CONVERSION - WARD. Ward takes the gap to just a point.
62 min: TRY - NACEWA. Kaino taps and goes from the free-kick and Auckland look to use their dangerous backs. Lavea makes a great burst from fly-half and powers into the Lions half before flicking it outside. Atiga takes it to the Lions 22 and the ball is then switched to the left. Kaino takes a tackle offloads to Collins, who in turn finds Nacewa and he is unstoppable.
61 min: Horgan is again the man the Lions look to in first phase play off the scrum but his pass is behind Cueto and goes straight out for an Auckland line-out. That becomes a free-kick when the Lions close the gap too quickly.
61 min: Dawson does superbly to wrap up Kaino and force him to knock on at the back of the scrum.
61 min: Matt Stevens is on for Hayes in the Lions front row.
60 min: Auckland look for an end-to-end try but in the end make no more than 40m as Corry manages to get a hand in. He knocks on, so it'll be a scrum to the hosts on the Lions' 10m line.
59 min: Cockbain gathers the line-out and the Lions look to make some progress up front. Williams tries to peel around towards the posts but he's held up and the Lions are pinged for coming in from the side in support of the Welshman.
58 min: O'Gara dabs the ball into touch down the left.
57 min: Line-out ball for the Lions is worked quickly to Horgan and he batters into contact. Cockbain takes it on the second phase and makes a good five metres before Williams makes 10 with an arcing run down the left. The ball is slowed down by Auckland but they've done so illegally. Penalty to the Lions five metres from the Auckland line.
57 min: Good line-out ball for Auckland but Lavea slices his kick so it'll be a Lions line-out on the Auckland 10m line. Telefoni is down with what appears to be shoulder trouble.
56 min: The Lions let the attacking chance go as the line-out goes astray. Auckland work it out to the right but Lavea is forced to kick ahead as the Lions' defence is strong. Cueto is back across covering for Murphy and he takes the ball past the first tackler before booming a kick down the left into touch.
56 min: The Lions bring Corry on for White.
56 min: O'Gara chips into touch down the right.
55 min: Collins gathers the restart and it's worked out to the left by Auckland. The penalty comes to the Lions in the first phase, though, as Atinga holds on in the tackle. A good attacking opportunity for the Lions here with the penalty five metres outside the Auckland 22.
54 min: PENALTY - WARD. Ward slots over the penalty from out wide.
53 min: Telefoni finds his man at the line-out and Auckland work it out to the left. D'Arcy dives in off his feet and gets some fearsome rucking, but he's in the wrong and the referee pings him. It's a penalty to Auckland and Ward is going for the posts.
52 min: Shaw does enough to get Bulloch's latest line-out throw back to Dawson. He chips over the top of the line-out, finding touch down the left on the Lions 10m line.
51 min: Devine gets in a huge hit of his own on O'Gara after the scrum is worked to the Irishman and Auckland manage to turn it over. The ball is worked to Lavea and he chips into touch down the right. Good territorial play from Auckland.
50 min: The Lions bring Shane Horgan on for Greenwood.
49 min: White takes the line-out ball and the ball is shipped out to O'Gara. His dabbed kick is well gathered by Ward, who carries forward towards the 10m line. Lavea hoists a clever diagonal kick towards Nacewa and MacDonald but Cueto puts in a ferocious hit as he challenges Nacewa and the Auckland man knocks on.
48 min: Owen goes off the base of the scrum before the Lions work a nice move in midfield to take play to the brink of the Auckland but it's turned over up front and Ward is able to carry it back into the Lions half. He plays the ball on the ground having been tackled, though, and O'Gara pumps the ball into touch down the right.
47 min: Telefoni again throws it in crooked. What more can you say?
46 min: Owen goes off the back of the scrum allowing Cueto to chip a kick ahead. Broken play suits Auckland down to the ground though and Atiga and Rokocoko link up superbly into the Lions' half. Telefoni then gets involved but this time his open-play handling lets him down as he knocks on. O'Gara pumps the ball into touch down the right from the subsequent scrum.
45 min: Jerome Kaino is on for Mika.
44 min: Lavea finds touch down the left but Telefoni again fails to get it in straight at the line-out. This has been an awful display of line-out play from the hooker.
43 min: Bryce Williams climbs highest at the line-out but shows poor hands and the ball goes back on the Lions side. The ball is recycled well by the Lions through three or four phases until it is held up at the ruck. Cockbain then strikes Devine at the fringes of the ruck with a right jab and the penalty is given to Auckland. Bulloch is told that there must be no more punches from the Lions.
42 min: Penalty to Auckland as Rowntree is pinged for not driving straight at the scrum. It's then brought forward 10m for a bit of backchat. Poor discipline there and Lavea pumps into touch down the left.
41 min: Auckland begin the second half as scrappy in possession as they were in the first half and cough the ball up. Dawson taps and goes quickly and takes contact. The ball is recycled quickly out to the right and the Lions make it to the Auckland 22 when Dawson knocks on.
40 min: Lavea's restart is gathered by Owen and is worked to O'Gara but his kick misses touch.
HT: Auckland 3 Lions 14.
40 min: That's half-time and the Lions have deserved their lead. The Williams try in the closing seconds - which owed much to Cueto - has put the icing on the cake of a good half spoiled only by Hodgson's departure. Auckland must improve if they are to get back into this one, particularly fly-half Lavea who has looked nervous to this point.
40 min: O'Gara just misses his conversion.
39 min: TRY - WILLIAMS. Telefoni again finds his man. Devine opts to kick ahead but his kick is gathered by Murphy. His ambitious long pass eventually finds Cueto after just evading Nacewa. Cueto powers from halfway to within a metre of the Auckland line with a brilliant in and out run. The ball is recycled quickly and flicked to Williams, who is unstoppable.
38 min: Telefoni finds his man at the line-out - a rare occurence thus far - but the move breaks down in midfield. Hickie fly-kicks ahead off the floor but the ball just evades him and skips over the touchline for an Auckland line-out deep in their own 22.
38 min: The restart is worked into O'Gara's hands and he finds touch down the right.
38 min: PENALTY - O'GARA. O'Gara slots over the penalty.
37 min: Auckland restart play with a kick into touch down the right. The ball is worked into the hands of Lavea but his kick is charged down. There's another blatant tug from an Auckland player and this time the penalty stands as the Lions keep their discipline.
36 min: Auckland will be counting their blessings there. That looked a clear yellow card for the pull-back on Williams but they have actually ended up with the penalty themselves. Brent Cockbain is into the fray with Kay having gone off with his left eye already shut.
35 min: Punches are exchanged after the penalty is given to the Lions. Kay is involved and the penalty is reversed with the England man adjudged to have thrown the first punch. The penalty is reversed as Kay gets back to his feet. Kay is sporting a huge shiner to the delight of the home crowd.
35 min: Good ball retention from the Lions as first Bulloch then Greenwood make 10m apiece to take play to underneath the Lions posts. Greenwood then tries to offload in the tackle but Williams is blatantly taken out with the tryline gaping.
34 min: Dawson is quickly wrapped up as he tries to work a move off the scrum and the ball finds its way back on the Auckland side. They choose to kick ahead through Ward but O'Gara is back quickly to gather and is back to his feet strongly to allow his team-mates to get around him.
33 min: Dawson works the ball to Greenwood who runs a nice angle to make 10 metres or so. The ball is recycled a couple of times up front before O'Gara slinks back into the pocket to attempt a drop goal. It fades away to the left. Auckland restart from the 22 but Lavea's kick is out on the full so it's a scrum to the Lions centrally on the Auckland 22. Another good chance.
32 min: Justin Collins does well to gather the restart under huge pressure and Auckland quickly look to use their width on the left. Atiga takes it into contact and looks to offload but Ward knocks on as O'Gara crunches him. Good chance for the Lions this.
31 min: PENALTY - WARD. Ward slots over the penalty with a lovely kick from out wide.
30 min: Penalty to Auckland as John Hayes is pinged for not driving in straight. Having failed with two forward routines from penalties, they are going for the posts this time.
29 min: Shaw attempts to gather the restart but it's knocked forward, presenting Auckland with a scrum put-in just outside the Lions' 22.
28 min: PENALTY - O'GARA. O'Gara slots over the penalty to double the Lions' lead.
27 min: Auckland get good ball from the scrum but there's a breakdown of communication in midfield and the ball comes back on the Lions side. Ward then fails to roll away in the tackle and it's a penalty to the Lions which O'Gara will surely slot over.
26 min: Dawson takes up his place in the defensive line as play resumes. Again Auckland are spurning the chance for three easy points to run the penalty. They work it out to the left but cough it up in a ruck and Dawson - apparently recovered from his injury - is in quickly to gather and work it to O'Gara. He chips a lovely kick diagonally over the top to Hickie. He outpaces Lavea but juggles the ball as he does so and it slips agonisingly out of his grasp.
25 min: Good line-out ball for Auckland - finally - and it gives them a good base to attack from. They recycle well through three or four phases to take play out to the right wing when Dawson gets in a big hit. He's down straight away with what appears to be shoulder trouble. Play continues and Williams is pinged for a transgression at the ruck. Dawson needs treatment.
24 min: O'Gara gets his first kicking attempt as Dawson flicks the ball into his hands and the Irishman finds a cracking touch down the right, taking play to the Lions 10m line.
23 min: Rowntree is bleeding from his right ear so the physio is on in an attempt to wipe the blood away. Matt Stevens prepares to enter the fray but the referee is happy with Rowntree's ear so the Leicester and England man can stay on.
22 min: Auckland work the short side with Devine going for the line to suck in the Lions defenders. The ball comes back quickly on the inside but Afoa knocks on in contact so it's a Lions put-in at the scrum around 10 or so metres from their own line.
22 min: Dawson's defensive work gets its reward as the video referee rules it 'held up'.
21 min: Play restarts with a penalty to Auckland as the Lions had transgressed at a ruck five metres or so from their own line. Auckland work a move through their forwards with John Afoa the man given the responsibility for powering towards the line. He's definitely over the line but Dawson looks to have prevented him from grounding it with a great piece of defensive work. The referee is not in the ideal position and it's going to the video referee.
20 min: Hodgson leaves the field struggling to catch his breath and O'Gara is on.
19 min: With Hodgson down the Lions are a man down defensively with Auckland scenting a try - but the Lions manage to slow the ball down sufficiently to keep them at bay. Hodgson looks in trouble and Ronan O'Gara is stripped off and ready to enter the fray.
18 min: The Lions get a shove on from the scrum before moving it through their backs. D'Arcy kicks ahead and gets a nice bounce as it skips through Ward's legs. He quickly gets back to his feet and kicks ahead. Hickie gathers but his kick is charged down and that forces Hodgson back. He is on the receiving end of a huge hit from Telefoni and it suddenly looks good for Auckland.
17 min: Again the line-out goes against the throw and Dawson pumps downfield. It's then coughed up by Auckland in the first phase as their run of mistakes continues. Scrum to the Lions between their own 10m line and halfway.
16 min: The ball is worked out to Isa Nacewa and he makes a good 10 metres. The ball is recycled quickly and eventually reaches Rokocoko after a bullocking run by Bradley Mika in midfield. Denis Hickie and D'Arcy are there and Hodgson manages to slap it out for a line-out.
15 min: Telefoni fails to get this line-out ball in straight so it's a Lions scrum. Auckland try to turn the scrum but Williams goes from the base just in time. It's worked to Hodgson and he pins back the Auckland backs with a clever kick. Ward opts to take it into contact rather than kick and Hodgson almost forces a knock-on but Auckland recycle.
14 min: Telefoni again misses his man at the line-out but the ball bounces kindly for Auckland. White puts in a huge hit and again Auckland are forced to kick downfield. Cueto carries it up 10 metres before Hodgson does likewise. Play then gets a little scrappy as first D'Arcy then Murphy can't make a break, with the latter forced to fly-kick ahead. Auckland are pegged back under their own posts but Martyn Williams goes far too quickly from the ruck and Lavea can find touch down the left.
13 min: Dawson quickly works the ball to Hodgson but his diagonal kick is gathered by Rokocoko. He takes contact and the ball is recycled into Lavea's hands. He pins back Murphy with a punt downfield but the Irishman returns the kick with interest. Auckland line-out in their own 22.
12 min: Auckland work a nice move down the right and Rokocoko shows nimble feet to make five metres in absolutely no space out wide. The ball is worked back through midfield but MacDonald knocks it forward to present the Lions with the put-in at the scrum on halfway.
11 min: The ball eventually squirts out of the ruck on the Lions' side but it's been knocked on by a red shirt so it'll be an Auckland put-in just short of their own 10m line.
10 min: Clean and crisp line-out ball for the Lions which they recycle through four or five phases up front before looking more expansively. Hodgson's kick ahead is marked by Ward and he quickly restarts, taking the first contact outside his own 22.
9 min: Another poor line-out throw from Telefoni bounces into Cueto's hands. He flicks it outside to Sale team-mate Hodgson and he bursts through the first line of defence. He draws the fly-half and chips ahead forcing Rokocoko back to dab the ball into touch.
8 min: Telefoni just about picks out Angus MacDonald at the back of the line and Ben Kay is penalised for coming through the ruck too quickly. Lavea pumps the ball into touch down the left so it'll be an Auckland line-out just outside the Lions 22.
7 min: The Lions look to work a move off the back of the scrum but Dawson's pass is too far in front of Murphy and behind Cueto so it skips out for an Auckland line-out.
6 min: The Lions win the ball at the line-out and eventually work it to Hodgson but again the Englishman fails to find his touch. Rokocoko looks to capitalise in broken play but he is quickly wrapped up and Lavea has to kick ahead under pressure. The ball skips over the tryline and goes dead in goal so it's a Lions put-in on the Auckland 10m line.
6 min: Michael Owen gathers the restart and flicks it outside to Mark Cueto, who takes the tackle. Dawson works it to Hodgson but his kick fails to find touch and Auckland look to move it out to the right to Rokocoko. The Lions' defence slides across well and forces Tuitupou to dab the ball down the line into touch.
5 min: PENALTY - HODGSON. Hodgson kicks the penalty.
4 min: Dawson taps and goes quickly despite the referee initially appearing to pull him back. It's recycled well and the Lions carry it forward to the brink of the Auckland 22 with Gordon D'Arcy in control and Simon Shaw driving him onwards. Ward puts a hand in illegally and it's an eminently kickable penalty for Hodgson from in front.
3 min: Semisi Telefoni's line-out throw is poor and the Lions are able to scrabble the ball back on their side. It's scrappy stuff and Dawson has to hack downfield down the right. He does well, though to find touch on halfway. A second line-out goes the way of the Lions against the throw and Auckland are penalised for holding on in the tackle.
2 min: Clean ball for the Lions from the line-out but they are forced back in midfield and Will Greenwood has to kick downfield. The ball is returned to halfway by Brent Ward and Rowntree is pinged at the first ruck. Lavea finds touch down the right. Auckland line-out inside the Lions 22.
1 min: Justin Collins gathers the kick-off and it's immediately worked to Tasesa Lavea. His kick ahead is straight into the hands of Geordan Murphy but the Irishman also fails to find his touch. Devine looks for width this time before Lavea kicks ahead, pinning back the Lions.
0 min: Hodgson gets the game under way by hoisting the ball into the night sky in Auckland.
Pre-match: The Lions' 'Midweek Massive' as they have come to be known are looking for another success to provide some crumbs of comfort for beleaguered head coach Sir Clive Woodward. While Woodward's Test team have been blown away by the All Blacks in Christchurch and Wellington, the midweek outfit - coached by Ian McGeechan and Gareth Jenkins - boast an unbeaten tour record. Victories over Taranaki, Wellington, Southland and Manawatu meant that McGeechan's men can preserve a proud 100% sequence with victory at Eden Park. Auckland though, threaten to be tough opponents with coach Pat Lam having selected a side containing wing sensation Joe Rokocoko and his fellow All Blacks Sam Tuitupou, Steve Devine and Brad Mika. Rokocoko, omitted by All Blacks supremo Graham Henry from the Lions Test series in favour of Sitiveni Sivivatu, had a point to prove. The Lions include four players in their 22 who were involved with the Test squad last weekend - Matt Dawson, Graham Rowntree, Martyn Williams and Martin Corry. Rowntree was not initially involved, but found himself called up to the starting XV after Sale Sharks prop Andrew Sheridan aggravated an ankle injury. England scrum-half Dawson's last tour start was in the defeat against New Zealand Maori on June 11, and he was partnered at half-back by Charlie Hodgson, who knew a strong performance could hurl him into contention for the third Test with Jonny Wilkinson unlikely to be fit. Scotland forward Jason White is selected for his Lions debut in the back row after flying out last week to replace knee-injury victim Richard Hill. Conditions are overcast with heavy showers drenching Auckland throughout the day, but the playing surface is immaculate.
