LIONS EDGE TO AUCKLAND VICTORY

Martyn Williams touches down for the Lions.

Ian McGeechan's Lions midweek team completed their New Zealand tour by maintaining a 100% record with a 17-13 victory over Auckland at Eden Park.

It was a fifth successive triumph following wins against Taranaki, Wellington, Southland and Manawatu, and was achieved despite losing fly-half Charlie Hodgson and lock Ben Kay to injuries.

Kay was punched out of the match by Auckland centre Sam Tuitupou, while Hodgson took a blow to the back of his head.

Ronan O'Gara, Hodgson's first-half replacement, kicked three penalties, while flanker Martyn Williams scored a well-worked try and Hodgson also booted a penalty.

Auckland replied with an Isa Nacewa try and eight points from full-back Brent Ward, but it was a scrappy game and the home side were frustrated not to give wing dangerman Joe Rokocoko any threatening opportunities.

Lions captain Gordon Bulloch said: "It was a great performance. The guys were running on empty towards the end.

"To get a win at a full Eden Park is a great achievement and I am proud man to lead them off."

McGeechan himself said: "I am very, very proud. It was a team full of character. They were intelligent in what they did, really dug in against a side that has some outstanding individual runners. It was a great team effort against a very good provincial side."
