LIONS TO GO DOWN HEROICALLY

"PANIC? It's not panic. It just needed shaking up. I'm going for all out attack with a bunch that are faster and younger."

That's the official reaction from Sir Clive Woodward after making 11 changes to the team for the second Test against the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday.

And you've got to applaud Sir Clive for having the guts to bring in Welsh backs Gavin Henson and Shane Williams, two of seven new starters, after picking a first Test side that was too English, too old and too tired to do more than limp to a 21-3 defeat.

Well, actually, let's not applaud. Let's just pray the new lot do a bit better than the last motley crew, who failed utterly to threaten the All Black line.

Henson might help. Moving captain Gareth Thomas next to him at centre is a good idea, though I might have switched Jason Robinson, who survives on one wing, opposite Tuesday's five-try hero Shane Williams, with Josh Lewsey at full-back.

You've got to feel a bit sorry for the Welsh Grand Slam winning fly-half Stephen Jones, replaced by the out-of-practice Jonny Wilkinson, abruptly ending the experiment of playing Wilko at centre.

Dwayne Peel keeps the scrum-half spot ahead of England's Matt Dawson and Scotland's Chris Cusiter.

This time, instead of nine English starters with three each from Wales and Ireland, we've got six Englishmen, six Welshmen and the Irish trio of Simon Easterby, Paul O'Connell and Donncha O'Callaghan. And still no Scotsmen of course.

Only the props, Gethin Jenkins and Julian White, plus lock O'Connell survive in the forwards.

Neil Back, Richard Hill and Martin Corry make way, as expected, for Lewis Moody, Simon Easterby and Ryan Jones in the loose, O'Callaghan replaces Ben Kay - now not even in the 22 - at lock.

Woodward has attempted to solve his line-out woes by recalling World Cup winner Steve Thompson at hooker ahead of the woeful Shane Byrne. Mind you, Thompson has been known to suffer the odd yip too.

The Lions coach had a quick go at his critics, saying: "I am having to take all the arrows, stone, brucks and stuff and get on with trying to win. Sometimes I am amazed at the vitriol and bile and you don't forget what is said.

"But strong people come out of this stronger. You've got to go out fighting. I'm not making changes for changes' sake, the guys I've brought in are playing well. I've got to go away from what I thought where the right tactics for the first Test to all-out attack with a bunch that are faster and younger.

"It's tough on those that have been left out, but collectively I, we, the team, got it wrong and I've got to make the changes and we've got to front up big time.

"We've got to go for this now, admit you got it wrong and be brave in your selections."

Brave? It's very brave.

Can Shane Williams and Jason Robinson, not the biggest of men, cope with an all-out running contest against the marauding All Blacks?

Will the Irish pair of O'Connell and O'Callaghan have a chance against the superb New Zealand locks Chris Jack and Ali Williams?

Can Jonny Wilkinson recover the magic he lost, amid a welter of injuries, nearly two years ago?

What I am sure of is this: Neil Back is a better flanker than Moody or Easterby.

But who knows? Miracles have happened.

My verdict, very different to the first Test: The All Blacks cut loose from the start and run in three or four early tries. The Lions hit back late on but lose heroically and with a little more panache than last week.

That's about the best we can hope for. God, what a miserable git I am.
