LIONS v OTAGO RATINGS

GEORDAN MURPHY: Was the Lions' most potent attacking threat for much of the game. His timing was slightly off on occasion and he dropped a couple of balls, but he hit the line with menace but did his Test chances no harm at all. 8/10

DENIS HICKIE: Another lively display from the Irish winger who sparked a couple of attacks and worked hard round the field but he is unlikely to have done enough to break into the Test squad. 7

WILL GREENWOOD: A calm presence in midfield and showed some deft touches, particularly as the game opened up. Scored the crucial first try for the Lions after taking up an opportunist position on the wing. 7

GORDON D'ARCY: Another disappointing display for the Irishman who was many people's tip for the Test team before the tour. Could not impose his attacking flair on a tight game before being replaced by Ollie Smith. 6

SHANE WILLIAMS: The elusive Welshman enjoyed attacking ball for the first time in a Lions jersey and responded with an excellent performance, finishing his try with a typical step and created openings out of nothing. 8

CHARLIE HODGSON: Not quite as eye-catching a display as against Taranaki and missed a tackle for the Otago try, but made amends with 15 points and a piece of opportunism to pick out Will Greenwood for the Lions' first score. 7

CHRIS CUSITER: Continued to put the pressure on Dwayne Peel for the Test jersey with another whole-hearted display. His pass was crisp and he has an eye for a gap. 8

GRAHAM ROWNTREE: A solid performance from the veteran loose-head but was not destructive enough in the tight, nor effective enough in open play to leap ahead of Gethin Jenkins and Andrew Sheridan in the Test pecking order. 6

GORDON BULLOCH: Captained the Lions for the first time and grew into an effective force in the loose after a couple of early wobbles at the line-out. 6

MATT STEVENS: Stevens played at tight-head today but his versatility in the scrum and ability in the loose, which he showed, means he has surely nailed down a place in the Lions Test squad. 7

SIMON SHAW: A heavy, powerful presence in the pack and forceful in the loose but could not impose himself on the line-out and was replaced for the final 20 minutes by Danny Grewcock. 6

DONNCHA O'CALLAGHAN: Ireland's third-choice lock is energetic and athletic round the field and offered the Lions a presence in the line-out. His game will have developed greatly from this trip even if he misses out on the Test side next weekend. 6.

SIMON EASTERBY: Not as eye-catching as his performance against Wellington but another accomplished display from the Irishman, who arrived as Lawrence Dallaglio's replacement and was asked to play twice in four days. 7

MARTYN WILLIAMS: Made himself a nuisance at the breakdown though the Lions were still too slow in getting him support, but he was also effective in the loose. It will be a tough call between Williams and Neil Back for the Test jersey. 8

RYAN JONES: A man-of-the-match performance from Jones, who only arrived on tour as a late replacement for Simon Taylor. He made constant inroads into Otago territory, made life difficult for them at the breakdown and capped an outstanding Lions debut with an excellently taken try. 9.

Replacements:

STEVE THOMPSON: His line-out work is still a concern but he offers bulk to the Lions pack and puts himself about in the loose. 6

ANDREW SHERIDAN: Brought a destructive force to the Lions pack when introduced with Thompson with 20 minutes remaining. 7

DANNY GREWCOCK: Introduced with 20 minutes left as the Lions brought on the heavy artillery to close out the game. 7

MATT DAWSON: Made typical darts and was lively around the fringes but not as dangerous as Cusiter. 6

OLLIE SMITH: Enjoyed more attacking ball than D'Arcy, made a scything break and his quick hands played a key role in Williams' try. 7.

RONAN O'GARA: Came on in the late stages and missed a penalty but the game was already won. 6
