Wigan ran in seven tries against Warrington tonight to gain a small measure of revenge for last week's Challenge Cup semi-final defeat to the same opponents.

The Wolves stunned their rivals to claim a place at Wembley six days ago but their much-changed side proved second best in an engage Super League rematch at the DW Stadium.

George Carmont touched down twice for the Warriors, while Pat Richards scored 16 points, and there were also tries for Amos Roberts, Cameron Phelps, Thomas Leuluai and Martin Gleeson.

That Warrington's performance dipped after the intensity of last week was not surprising but the emphatic loss could be damaging to their play-off hopes.

Victories for Harlequins and Catalans elsewhere this weekend could now leave them outside the top eight but fifth-placed Wigan's hand was strengthened considerably.

That seemed to matter little to the Warrington fans, however, as they continued to gloat over their cup heroics throughout

Warrington's consolation tries came through Chris Bridge, Vinnie Anderson and Chris Riley, with the damage done as Wigan hit them with six in 27 minutes spanning half-time.

Warrington were forced to make five changes to the side that beat the Warriors last week due to injury, with semi-final hat-trick hero Matt King one of the players ruled out.

Winger Kevin Penny was given the chance to reignite his Wolves career after being recalled from a loan spell at Widnes this week but he had a low-key game.

Penny was constantly cajoling his team-mates early on but, in his eagerness to impress, he knocked on trying to gather a loose ball early on and allowed Wigan to apply pressure.

Wigan's chance was lost as Andy Coley dropped the ball in a tackle close to the line and Warrington hit back to go ahead.

Carmont thought he had won the race to claim a Michael Monaghan kick however replays showed Bridge just managed to nip in ahead to touch down.

Wigan responded strongly with Richards taking a long pass and cutting inside to score on the left wing.

The hosts then took the lead as Roberts outpaced the Warrington defence to collect a clever kick from halfway by Sean O'Loughlin and race in to score.

Sam Tomkins was the next to cut through the Wolves line and, although he was eventually caught, Phelps took up the attack from dummy half to claim another.

Wigan added a fourth try in the space of 18 minutes after the influential Iafeta Paleaaesina powered forward and was allowed to offload. The ball found its way to Leuluai and the scrum-half weaved his way through to the posts to give Wigan a 22-4 interval lead.

Wigan continued where they left off to add two more tries within seven minutes of the restart.

Gleeson claimed the first of them against the club he left in April as he broke clear following more good work by Tomkins.

Carmont then followed him over moments later after running up in support of Richards on the left.

Perhaps worryingly, Warrington were without talisman Lee Briers in the second half.

Riley denied a reply after impeding Roberts in a challenge for a loose ball.

Wigan extended their lead as Carmont crashed over for his second try from a Mark Flanagan offload.

The job was effectively done with an hour gone but Warrington added some respectability to the scoreline as Anderson crashed over and Riley squeezed in at the corner late on.

Bridge converted both and an Anderson interception almost caught Wigan again but the contest was long over.
