Super League side Wigan were given a scare at Championship club Barrow, who pushed them all the way before succumbing to a defeat in this Carnegie Challenge Cup fourth-round tie.

In the end the hat-trick of tries in the first half by Shaun Ainscough proved crucial for Warriors, but there was never much in the scoreline for the first hour.

Ainscough's first try came after six minutes after a great break by George Carmont but the Raiders were level five minutes later when Liam Finch broke through on his own.

Ainscough went over again in the 17th minute from another Carmont break but three minutes later Wigan were shaken when Barrow went ahead with a great break from their own 20-metre line. Jamie Butler started the move, Liam Harrison carried it on and James Nixon sped away to provide the finishing touch.

Ainscough completed his hat-trick on the half-hour and then provider Carmont became the finisher two minutes before the break.

Carmont scored his second try three minutes into the second half but Barrow were not finished as William Campbell crossed from a break by man of the match Finch.

A second penalty by Paul Noone cut Barrow's deficit to four points and they looked to have levelled when Harrison went over in the corner only to be denied by a forward pass ruling.

To make things worse for Barrow, Wigan went down the field and Karl Pryce was given a try when he looked to have dropped the ball.

The finishing touch for Wigan came when Sam Tomkins crossed five minutes from time.
