Top-rated teenagers Sam Tomkins and Shaun Ainscough scored two tries apiece as Wigan powered to a morale-boosting engage Super League win at Salford.

Stand-off Tomkins showed pace and real star quality with two long-range touchdowns while fellow 19-year-old Ainscough was not to be outdone.

Thomas Leuluai also grabbed a brace while Pat Richards touched down once and kicked five goals to prolong struggling Salford's miserable start to the campaign.

Salford could at least celebrate the performance of their own potential star in 18-year-old Richard Myler, who claimed both the hosts' tries.

Wigan coach Brian Noble hoped the shock of dropping close-season signing Amos Roberts to the reserves would spark his side back into life.

The Warriors had bounced back after losing their opening three games with back-to-back victories but were then thrashed by Leeds last week.

It appeared to do the trick as Wigan dominated throughout aside from a few early flurries from the home side, for whom the step up to the top flight remains a chastening experience.

Salford had an early chance when Myler kicked through but half-back partner Jeremy Smith failed to gain control.

Wigan responded strongly with former Reds forward Andy Coley offloading for George Carmont to burst through a gap and put Ainscough over in the corner.

Myler, returning from a hand injury, threatened to set up an instant reply after a great break from halfway but Karl Fitzpatrick was forced into touch.

Wigan went further ahead when Ainscough was again released down the left, this time by Mark Riddell, and then passed inside for Leuluai to race in.

Salford got themselves on the scoreboard when Myler dived onto a Smith grubber kick and Jordan Turner added the extras, but Tomkins soon put Wigan back in charge.

The half-back prodigy, who made his first Super League start only a fortnight ago, sensed an opportunity from 40 metres out and broke clear for a superb individual try with a nice sidestep.

Richards then barged through several tackles to make the half-time score 22-6 with Wigan's fourth touchdown.

The visitors tightened their grip soon after the restart when Tomkins gathered a loose ball on halfway and charged down the touchline for his second dazzling try.

Ainscough matched his feat soon after when he cut inside from his wing to double his try tally.

Salford struggled to live with Wigan as the game wore on but Myler underlined his potential by hitting a Smith pass at speed to score under the posts. Stefan Ratchford converted.

Wigan wrapped the game up in style as Richards sped most the length of the field through weary Salford defence and Leuluai finished the move.

The opposition may not have been the strongest, but Wigan's recent results are starting to look more encouraging for under-pressure boss Noble, with three wins from four.

Salford remain winless since their season-opening victory over Celtic Crusaders.
