A young Leeds Rhinos side went down 22-16 to an experienced Wakefield at Headingley in their first match since the engage Super League Grand Final.
Centre Joe Broughton, who spent much of last season on loan at Hull, scored a hat-trick and Michael Ratu scored the other try for the champions, who were without all their World Cup stars.
Wakefield led 10-6 at half-time thanks to tries from Liam Walmsley and Sam Obst and clinched victory with quickfire tries in the second half through Matt Blaymire and Jamie Rooney, who crucially converted both.
The Rhinos included four trialists from the French domestic competition looking to shine and Amar Sabri was particularly impressive in defence.
